Hi everyone,

As many of you know, a couple of weeks ago, I began working on a new side project, https://www.dazah.com ... After taking about two weeks, focusing all my efforts on coding and launching it, I've now resumed my focus on DaniWeb. For the past couple of days, I began working on a new DaniWeb skin (essentially, just changing all of the CSS, giving the site a more modern appearance). There are about 200 templates in total, and so it's most likely going to take a good portion of September to get this all done. However, there's something to look forward to.

I just want to reiterate that this is a cosmetic-only change, primarily limited to the CSS stylesheet. No code is being changed, no features/functionality are being modified, etc. Once I get the entire site on an updated CSS, then I can slowly roll out more functional improvements individually.

I do have two rough templates available to show you so far. Keep in mind this is a work in progress.

Looks sleek and simple. I like the toned down colors. No top navigation bar?

It's not set in stone yet, but, as of right now, I'm leaning towards no.

Like it, however, reminds me of another well-known coding site. ;)

I like the mature, clean lines without the confused styles. Big hand for this. Extremely heartening to see you working on DW. Thank you.

looks good, but without a menu it's going to be a nightmare to navigate.

commented: agree. Menu (at least something alike) is must-have for site of this size +0

I'm going to launch it the way I envision, and then judge from feedback and how the new menu system ultimately gets used whether I need to reconsider or not. While I don't think it's going to be the nightmare you're thinking, it's not something that I am strongly against. Then again, Microsoft was pretty excited about the Windows 8 dashboard being a great replacement for the Start Menu.

I have to make a feature request though. Would you be so kind as to block url's in the chat. It's getting spam links now too, instead of just links to threads with help me requests.

At this time, I'm not making any functionality changes as I am only changing templates and not altering the PHP code for this project. This will be a cosmetic change only. If you have any feature requests, please ask them in a different thread so that I can loop back around and look after this restyling project is done in a couple of weeks.

That being said, I'm not really entirely on board with disabling links in chat. However, moderators can already go into a chat log and double click a line to permanently erase it.

Hi everyone,

I'm excited to share that my new design is nearly complete, and we should be going live over the next couple of days. Maybe even sooner! :)

Current status: Attempting to pull an allnighter to get everything done. I hate putting it down when I'm so close to the finish line, so let's see how this goes.

Good luck, but speaking from my own experience of way too many allnighters I'd say rest is ultimately more beneficial than enthusiasm in the long term. Don't knock yourself out Dani! :)

I'm too close to the finish line to put it down right now :)

You said it too soon. I'm starting to really feel sleepy, so I'm going to call it a night. I lasted until 4:30 am though!

G'night :)

Nutter.

Another delay. I've been struggling for the past day on how to redesign the chat to be a lot more useful and a lot less confusing. I keep going back and forth between just having one large chat room, or just getting rid of member shoutboxes, or what, specifically to do. Any suggestions or opinions on the matter?

commented: one big chat is kind of nonsense to me. I prefer many smaller chats (eg. sorted by subject) than one big for everything.... +0

However, moderators can already go into a chat log

I get a list of dates, but the logs aren't opening.

opinions on the matter?

Just make sure you don't annoy people with repeatedly opening popups ;)

commented: Oh yes. Destroy that popup. +0

Sorry, I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean?

Now that the design is rolled out, the code freeze has come to an end. I'm now once again accepting feature requests, etc.

Ok, get rid of the sidebar, heh heh. Sorry, couldn't resist ;)

Shrink down the width of your browser window.

Why don't I just buy a new laptop with a narrower screen?

I didn't think of that. You're right, that would work too. :)

He he. "Interviews" tab - I think we've only ever had 13 interviews in total - does this warrant its own tab?

The tab only shows up if there actually are interviews in the section.

Realise that. Just prime location for little info. Anyhow, sorry Dani - this for feature requests not for jabbering on.

Realise that. Just prime location for little info.

Editorial content (interviews, etc.) are often paid for, either by directly paying staff writers a retainer, or through the rewards system. Therefore, from my point of view, nothing screams for "prime location" more than the content that I pay for out of my own pocket.

Fair enough. Just nothing new there for over 3 years. Looks sort of defunct. No biggie though.
