Sorry for the nooby question, but i've always wanted to make an instant messenger, I figured java was the best language as it is Multi platform and extremely portable. I wondered if their was any open source code i could look at to help me.

(It looks like this must be a standard project on some programming courses.) Their posts contain lots of pieces of interesting code, and a large amount of discussion about the problems they encountered. and how to solve them.
