Hello all,

I'm very new to assembly programming, even I didn't start programming in assembly, I'm just learning some basics.

I've been confused about x86 assembly and 8086 assembly, I know x86 is a family of processors produced by Intel, which starts with the 16-bit 8086 and ends with the 32-bit Pentium 4 processor and then comes the 64-bit processor Itanium which is not a member of the x86 family...

Anyways what I want to know is that I see these two things:
1) 8086 Assembly Language.
2) x86 Assembly Language.

Does the first one means assembly language for 16-bit processors of the x86 family (8086, 8088, 80186, 80286) and the second one means programming assembly for the 32-bit processors of the x86 family (80386, 80486, Pentium, till Pentium 4), If so why didn't they called it x86-32 assembly, and is the reason for calling the first one with 8086 is that 8086 was the first 16-bit Intel Processor?

They both refer to the same family of processors, starting with the 8086 and going through to the latest 64 bit processors in the same family.

The Itanium are another family of 64 bit processors.
