I have tried installing many databases on my computer and I always run into some problem. From installation problems, to Visual Studio problems, I just can't figure it out. I really love databases, and find them useful in development. Please, and thank you for your help.

Uninstall visual studio and then manually remove all files and folders (rename root folder of VS). Installer can report problem if there are relics of previous installations. Alternatively, check antivirus etc. Finally, if everything fail, you can try to use Process monitor written by Sysinternals, to reveal virtually any filesystem issue.

Okay I will try all of that and post my status after. I have had database problems for some time, and I would really like to get one up and running for development. Does anyone have any suggestions for database software to use with C# and visual studio on WinXP SP3?

Uninstalled everything. Installed VS2010, tried installing SQL Server Express 2008.
