I am getting an error message on this php script and am a total loss as I am a complete novice and have no idea. Can someone give me some help?

There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the code itself (syntax-vise, at least) so there must be some hidden character at the start there, like the UTF8 Byte Order Mark (BOM).

Try using Notepad++.
Open the file in that and from the "Format" menu select: "Convert to UTF8 without BOM".
