I would recommend :
1. Mambo / Joomla
2. ezPublish
3. CMS made simple
in that order. Check out the plugins available for these systems too.
You can check out opensourcecms.com for good reviews on the most popular CMS systems.

I would recommend Drupal.
I have used Drupal in the past and I prefer it better than all the other CMS.
It is easy to use and customize.

You can't beat it.
For your news and events, you could use a blog product like Simple PHP Blog.
