CentOS is a decent distribution. It should be noted that you should be using the ia32e (EMT64) kernel rather than the x86_64 kernel if you're going down the CentOS 3.x route. I'm not too sure about Centos 4, though. M.

centos is a copy of rh, minus the logos. that's basically all they do - replace logos and maintain the repos :) and that actually gives redhat business, since any serious company can try out centos, decide it is good for them, and then go and buy redhat for support

CentOS is probably the best choice if you like the RPM package style. You'd probably find a lot of CentOS and RHEL in larger production environments. When I was working IT at a technical college, all we used was RHEL for our Linux courses. Either are probably going to do well for you. Bill

CentOS (a clone of RHEL) works well and is in wide use for this purpose by many major hosting providers and major businesses, such as the Chicago options exchange. However, CentOS has fallen behind current developments, so if you are interested in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) version 6 clone that is free, try Scientific Linux, available at […

centos 4.4 is an exact copy of redhat enterprise 4.4 and is free. but thats a big download (like 3.5 gig) or you could try a type of linux called ubuntu. thats even easier for first time users as you can run it staright from the cd to test it out before installing. That is only a 650mb download

CentOS is Redhat Enterprise except free. Version 5 roughly = bits from Fedora 5/6 and Version 4.4 roughly = bits from Fedora 2/3

centOS or debian if you go linux and want a server. (I prefer debian) Ubuntu offers a LAMP-focused release, but I forget the perks besides having it all installed at the get-go. I have no idea when this thread began, but PHP is pretty mature at this point. Ruby/Rails is the latest craze. Hope you find it helpful. From my experiance, Linux …

CentOS (server) or Fedora (desktop) For Red Hat Enterprise Linux, you will have to contact Red Hat themselves.

CentOS. It is what is used in most web hosting centers and is designed for web hosting. Also if you want to use it as an email server check out qmailtoaster. They have a series of scripts that install and configure Apache, PHP and MySQL for you with a very secure configuration.

CentOS is probably the most common actually. (For servers) It's basically a free version of RedHat Enterprise Linux. (Meaning you'll have to learn to use a RHEL distro)

A couple years ago, RedHat Linux was a completely open-source, freely-available linux solution that brought linux to the masses. Then, RedHat changed the paradigm: they wanted to transform RHL to a corporate supported linux, and enjoined with the Fedora Project for community support. But now a choice had to be made for linux users-- stay with …

I beg to differ, CentOS is a very well-established distro of Linux. It is one of the main free alternatives to the big names in server distributions of Linux (RHEL and SLES). If you want a stable server-grade Linux distribution for free (no support plan costs), then CentOS is really good option, so are the up-stream distributions like Fedora (ahead…

Re. ipkg for installing .ipk packages. Let me do some research and get back to you on that. I've been running RHEL/CentOS/SL systems for about 8 years now and never ran into that requirement! :-) Ok. Here is a link to an RPM that will install the ipkg installer on Red Hat 6.x or compatible (such as CentOS) systems: http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/…

The school network probably requires a proxy connection to get past the firewall. What did you do specifically to fix this? FWIW, most browsers (Chrome, Firefox, etc) allow you to tell it to auto-discover the network proxy settings and then use those to connect with internet web sites. I had to do that with Firefox on my work CentOS virtual machine…

Unfortunately, the Linux world is full of untryed paths. So is a bunch types of distro's. Amongst them, your CentOS. And the worst is yet to come: there is a little support available for this distro too. Regardind the similarities with other OS's from the family, you will find many problems with that distro. Still unsolved. Maybe in the future... …
