Hi I am trying to salvage user data from a hard drive that was installed in a Dell laptop. I have plugged it in to a Dell 490 workstation running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit using a USB connection kit - leads and power supply. First I used Chkdsk, it ran for over a week but failed after the PC rebooted due to a MS update. I tried again and Chkdsk completed checking the disk in a shorter time span. Several errors were found and repaired, 25 index issues and a bad cluster. However, I couldn't access the drive's contents. …

I have a 320GB SATA drive that I was using as an external drive when, rather suddenly, the drive stopped functioning. Windows XP (which is what I was running on my old PC) didn't even recognize that I'd attached the drive. Well, I held onto the drive (it was actually under warrenty, but I couldn't get anyone to drop it in the mail for me) and not long ago someone suggested I try a program called MiniTool Power Data Recovery to see if maybe that would help with the drive. Well, I can't get it to recover any data, but …

Hello, My old motherboard died without my having the ability to delete the old drivers off of the hard drive. I have installed a new motherboard and am attempting to boot into the old hard drive, however, Windows 7 will simply start up, try to load the files, and then enter a restart loop. I know why this is happening. It cannot find the appropiate files to boot off the hard drive because the new motherboard is conflicting with the old drivers on the old hard drive. I have attempted to boot off the Windows 7 disc and do a …

I'm using Windows XP, and I have a Hitachi 2TB drive that I disconnected earlier today. When I reconnected the USB cable I heard it come on, but the prompt asking how I want to open the drive did not. When I checked My Computer it was no longer named "Hitachi" but "Local Disk (E:)" instead. When I open it, none of my folders show. When I check Disk Properties it shows the normal percentages of used/free disk space. Please help!

I have a Seagate 500GB external hard drive that has been put in a new casing after some wires in the original came loose. I only got it back two days ago. So today I plugged it into my macbook and everything was fine, and then suddenly the warning/error window pops up saying that it's not been ejected safely. I hadn't touched the acutal hard drive or the wire or anything. I thought it might've overheated or something so I unplugged it, left it for a few minutes and then plugged it back in and nothing happened. The light on …

Was hoping would be as simple as plugging it in and then setting as a slave on the BIOS... seems I was a little too optimistic. I have a new hard drive in on a clean install of Windows 7. I would like to add my old hard drive, transfer existing data from it, then format it and use it for extra storage space However, the BIOS never regognises the 2nd drive. Motherboard is ASUS Rampage 2 Extreme Both drives are Seagate Barracuda's 7200.11 (3tb & 1.5tb) New drive has Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit Old drive is on a triple …

3 days ago I plugged in my external into a USB hub to connect it to my laptop and be able to use a USB mouse and keyboard at the same time. I was running music off it (My iTunes library is on my external) when I heard it make the "disconnected noise" and iTunes crashed. I unplugged the device and plugged it back in and it came up with the following message: "cannot read device must be formatted first" It didn't recognise a size or name for the device but it could read that it was a Maxtor. Hi, I'm running two 1 TB Western Digital drives, and in Windows 7, the secondary one is slow to access. I have it mounted as M:, and Windows Explorer shows a green progress bar at the top when it loads the root directory. Here's the weird part. It's VERY fast for any subdirectories. If I enter a large subdirectory, I can go into all the directories inside it very quickly, and files load quickly. But, if I navigate backwards to the root, there's a delay before it shows up again. I have Windows set to index the entire partition. There's …

Hi, I was trying to use my friend's hard drive the other day, but my Windows computer would not recognize it because it was in a Mac file format. I'm now trying to create a program (simple cli), pretty much a file folder, but that would be able to read (and eventually copy from) Mac and Linux file formatted drives as well. I'm still at the starting stages (I'm still a newbie) and I've been looking around the web trying to find a way to simply look at the drives connected to the computer. So far, the only way I've …

Hi Guys, I have a toshiba L300D laptop, and a couple of days ago the harddrive just gave up, i knew it had a large amount of bad sectors so luckily had all the necessary data backed up. However, i have decided that having to replace the harddrive gives me an excuse to upgrade to Windows 7. With this in mind I want to upgrade the harddrive to probably between 250GB and 500GB. Im slightly concerned however that my laptop wont support a harddrive that large. Basically, does anyone know where i can find out what the largest harddrive i …

So, I recently got an MBR virus and after (and partially during) removal I began to get frequent BSOD's and freezes (as in, no debug info simply stop doing any operation), and those BSOD's didn't provide any useful debug information (no message in all caps such as "IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL"). I ran a chkdsk and it came out clean and I also ran a Windows Memory Diagnostic (2 passes), and that came out clean as well. Please note that there is absolutely no chance of this MBR virus still there, I deleted all partitions of all of my …

Seagate made the switch to serial-attached SCSI (SAS) drives a few years ago, but have only upgraded to the 6 Gb/s standard (SAS 2.0) within the last year. SAS drives require special controllers that are occasionally built into motherboards, but more often, come in the form of a PCI-Express card in order to achieve 6.0 Gb/s. The Savvio product line is marketed towards enterprise customers, purchasing drives for businesses or applications that require high speed and reliability, usually in the form of a RAID configuration. As such, these are not marketed, or priced, for the average consumer or computer enthusiast. …

I have a year and a half old Sony Vaio notebook that just developed a problem. It boots up normally but then when you click on any app, the timer spins and spins and the program never comes up. Control-alt-delete doesn't work at that point; the hard drive LED doesn't show any sign of activity. I can, however, open apps if I click on them before the boot up process is completed. But once the boot up is complete nothing works. Any ideas?
