The start button does make a comeback, sort of, in Windows 8.1 but it's still not enough to satisfy the die-hard 'I got Windows 8 but miss Windows 7' brigade. Not least as when you click the Windows 8.1 start button it doesn't pop up the old folder-structured start menu that many people miss so much, but instead it just takes you back to the start screen which those same folk have such a dislike of. Of course, if you right click the start button in Windows 8.1 it does produce a start menu of sorts, with one-click access to …

CodeIgniter 3.0 is available in development, and has been taken over by British Columbia Institute of Technology, taken over from Ellis Labs, and has moved to [CodeIgniter.com](http://www.codeigniter.com/). I am new to using PHP and databases, but after trying to figure out the best platform to work on a web project for being a basic-to-intermediate web worker, I decided CodeIgniter had the best potential for flexibility, and also a learning curve that I could handle. Since I don't have much experience with C-like languages and programming, I still have troubles with getting the structure of the web programs (the application that …

The purpose of this short and sweet tutorial is equally concise: how to get the original look and feel of the Google Chrome web browser back after installing on a Windows 8 computer. Having recently been forced into buying a new laptop, I finally took the plunge and decided to start using Windows 8 on a daily basis. In fact I upgraded the Windows 8 OS that came with my Lenovo Y510P laptop to Windows 8.1 Pro, and am happy enough with it apart from a few small UI niggles which I will be addressing in a series of brief …

Hello DaniWeb Family, A few years after obtaining my Master's in Business, I decided to completely change careers and go back to school for web design and development. I've recently completed a 2-year program where I studied VB, ASP.NET, C#, Java, SQL, Server 2008, Photoshop, and Dreamweaver among other courses. I love designing and building the front-end of the website as well as writing programs and applications and building databases for the back-end. What I'd like to do now is build a database-driven dynamic website similar to Expedia.com but for a different industry. Is this do-able at my newbie level …

When it comes to web browsers, my general rule of thumb is that the latest version is usually the most secure and this is certainly the case with Internet Explorer. However, when I started using Internet Explorer 11 on my new Windows 8.1 Pro laptop I soon discovered that latest doesn't always mean greatest in terms of usability. If you have read my "[How to return the resize buttons to Google Chrome](http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/windows-vista-and-windows-7-8/tutorials/470978/windows-8-how-to-get-your-google-chrome-resize-buttons-back)" tutorial, you will appreciate that Windows 8 doesn't always give you the UI experience that you are expecting, or that you want. Such was the case when I …

# Have you ever tried using the String.Compare method for a case-insensitive string comparison? # The [documentation](http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/zkcaxw5y(v=vs.100).aspx) on MSDN for the overloaded method: 'Declaration Public Shared Function Compare ( _ strA As String, _ strB As String, _ ignoreCase As Boolean _ ) As Integer states `Compares two specified String objects, ignoring or honoring their case, and returns an integer that indicates their relative position in the sort order.` At first glance, this looks like exactly what we want, doesn't it? There's a catch... look at the documentation again, especially the last phrase `and returns an integer that indicates their …

Samsung has fixed the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) exploit that could remotely wipe data from a Galaxy S III smartphone, but that doesn't mean the USSD threat is over: far from it in fact. According to some security researchers, 400 million Android device users are at risk from having their hardware bricked. It's not just owners of the Samsung Galaxy S III that are vulnerable to this particular attack, or indeed just Samsung handsets at all as first thought. As is often the case, the discovery of a vulnerability leads to several new ways to exploit it and that's …

Hi, I want to start the following project: 1. I got data from several Smartphone tests - did most of them myself. 2. I want to write a programm, where the user can choose different options and than will get his "perfect" phone. 3. My Question: [LIST] [*]What would you use, what is the best start here? C# Windows Forms and an XML-table? [*]Is it hard to learn using XML-tables? [*]Would you say that this is hard to do being a beginner? (My goal is to learn something about "databases" and how to read and write them using C# and …
