Apple hacking PWN2OWN supremo and security researcher Charlie Miller is preparing to reveal just how to hack an Apple MacBook battery. Yep, you read that right: Apple battery hacking could be coming to a MacBook near you soon. Well, near you if you happen to be in Las Vegas for the annual Black Hat conference in August that is. Otherwise, DaniWeb suspects you probably won't see any such thing. Miller, the principal research consultant with Accuvant Labs, says he will demonstrate how to reverse engineer both the MacBook embedded controller (that controls battery charging) firmware and the firmware flashing process …

Firefox can finally orient itself, at least in terms of iPhones and MacBooks. Mozilla's latest browser, Firefox 3.6 beta 1, can now talk to accelerometers such as those in many Apple devices, thanks to orientation event objects introduced in the new Gecko 1.9.2 presentation engine at the browser's core. Also among DOM enhancements are drag-and-drop for file transfer and the ability for Web workers to self-terminate. And that's just the beginning. The download of Firefox 3.6 beta 1 for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows contains thousands of bug fixes, including numerous repairs to CSS image rendering and text alignment. …

If you are in the market for a new Apple computer, you might want to wait a few days. It would appear that new super thin iMacs, MacBooks and even a cheaper Mac Mini are on the way real soon. According to AppleInsider a raft of advertisements were published ahead of time, in error, by the Netherlands Apple Store online. The Google Adsense adverts were spotted on Google.nl but when eager shoppers clicked the links they arrived at the Apple Store only to discover the goods were not actually available. And what goods. The advertising would appear to confirm many …

Apple released its third quarter numbers yesterday and by any benchmark they were impressive. Consider these numbers as reported by Macworld: * $8.34 billion in sales and a net profit of $1.23 billion * 5.2 million iPhones * 10. 2 million iPods * 2.6 million Macs (of which1.75 million were laptops) It's impressive by any standards, but according to AppleInsider it represents the best non-holiday quarter ever. Think about that, then consider we are still in the midst of a massive recession, it's even more astounding. So Much for Laptop Hunters A story came out the other day that Microsoft …

Apple kicked off its annual World Wide Developer's Conference on Monday, and it proved something very important; it could generate plenty of excitement without Steve Jobs on stage. I know that I along with many others watch with anticipation as live bloggers on the scene gave us the blow by blow of each announcement; and with each one--the new lower priced Mac Book Pros, the iPhone 3Gs, the $99 iPhone and the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade--you could watch the buzz rise across Twitter, across the blogosphere. It simply didn't matter that Jobs wasn't up on stage delivering the news. It …

Apple came out with its earnings report yesterday, and while all wasn't rosy for the Cupertino technology company, bottom line is they made money as earnings increased an impressive an impressive 8.7 percent in year over year earnings with net profits up 15 percent (as reported in the Guardian). All this in the middle of what the IMF recently called, the worst economic climate since the Great Depression. Computer Sales Down As has been widely reported Mac sales have been off. This is the time of year for wish lists, so why not make a list of products I would like to see Apple make in 2009. I'm not under any illusions that Apple will actually listen to me, but this is a fun exercise and some of these would be really easy to do. 1. iPhone External Keyboard I like tap typing and I've gotten quite proficient at it, but if I want to use my iPhone as a portable computer and do some writing, I could use a real external keyboard with a cradle for my iPhone. I would …

I like to follow news about Apple and its products as much as anyone. It's interesting and fun and watching the speculation is a kind of voyeurism, a way to get inside a company that keeps a tight lid on information, but much like baseball trade rumors, which I also love to follow, most of them turn out to be dead wrong. Yet we continue to insist on speculating and this week was no different as rumors flew about the health of the company and new lower-end devices. In time the Rockies may crumble Gibraltar may tumble They're only made of clay But our love is here to stay ~Ira Gershwin. These are heady days for Apple and its CEO Steve Jobs. In spite of a world economy that appears to be sliding out of control, and with rumors swirling that Jobs is either retiring, near death, or at least gravely ill; the company he helped found continues to thrive. The iPhone, a mere 15 months after it hit the market, actually outsold RIM, the makers of Blackberry last quarter, selling an unbelievable 7 million units--a fact …

The latest Apple Event has been and gone, and we are left with some exciting new Apple products as a result. First and foremost the shiny new MacBook with the all-metal enclosure crafted from a single block of aluminum. Apple says that this means not only a thinner MacBook but, importantly, a much more durable one. It doesn't look bad either! Inside the beautiful new body things have also changed. There is the addition of state of the art NVIDIA graphics for a start and large glass iPhone-inspired Multi-Touch trackpads to finish. Let's look at the NVIDIA graphics first then. …

Rumors are flying this week ahead of Apple's big Mac Book event on Tuesday that it will announce the long rumored sub-$1000 notebook. In fact, my friends at The Unofficial Apple Weblog are reporting that someone has gotten their hands on a price sheet ahead of the announcement suggesting that there will be an $800 Mac Book. If it's true, and nothing is official yet--Apple tends to be tight-lipped about announcements, as you are no doubt aware--it comes at perfect time as consumers are hungry for lower prices. Apple today had one of 'those' events in San Francisco. At 10am PDT, under the banner of Let's Rock, Steve Jobs made a number of important product announcements. These included a brand new version of iTunes in the shape of iTunes 8. This comes with support for HD television programmes, a 'Genius' playlist function which recommends songs based on what you listen to and what you own, and a new flat album view. A new iPod Nano, the Nano 4G, becomes the thinnest iPod ever. It can do the Genius thing all on its own without needing to be connected …

My infatuation about the new Macbook Air is not ending just yet. In fact, the ComputerWorld blog has news -- hopefully insider scoop -- about what I'm dreaming about. Author Seth Weintraub says that the reason for the Macbook Pro delay (that is, why they weren't announced last week at MacWorld) was part of an Intel shortage of Penryn processors. According to sources, these processors, which are extremely fast and aren't as hot as their predecessors, won't be available until February. Which gives you more time to dream and get pumped, because there are more goodies on the table. The …

So, MacWorld finally came and went. For months, I've anticipated this event. After Apple released Leopard in November, I had my eyes set on moving over to the Mac world. But without any guarantees that Apple would preinstall Leopard on existing laptops in their inventory and after hearing about numerous applications that weren't Leopard compatible, I told myself that I'd wait a little longer. And after today, I'm waiting even longer. The Macbook Air, an excellent addition to the Apple Macbook family, looks hot. Integrating iPhone/iPod Touch technology into the touchpad is just awesome. But did Apple forget about its …
