Re: What's the most unexpected hobby or interest you have outside of coding?

Probably the most unexpected (for a die-hard old-fashioned technical programmer) would be Reiki. I feel like since I've been doing this, my master has introduced me into so many things that appear to have been missing from my life. So much is falling into place now, and I have a very different (and better) view of my life now.

Dani , yes I also believe that you are responsible for the decline of DaniWeb .... BUUUT that was many years ago. We all foreseen the decline of "forums" back in early 2010's , there were many alternatives of what to do , and I strongly believe that you choose the wrong one. I will not repeat what you did or what you could be done …

> what was missing was a programming hub of news / forum / interviews I have always been a strong proponent of having editorial (news, tutorials, interviews, etc.) complement the user-generated forum discussions. In the past, well over 50% of our gross revenue from advertising went straight into paying for staff writers. IMHO we used to have …

I got a call from Best Buy this morning to tell me my laptop was back. When I got to the counter I told the tech that I would not accept it until they showed me that it could be reset to factory. I'll leave out a few of the details that don't matter to the tale. He powered up the laptop and showed me Windows 11. The touchpad was working. He went…

Got a call from Best Buy at 6:30 pm the same day. He informed me that the Windows system that the tech installed was not the OEM version for my machine. I asked why this should matter since I requested a reset to factory from the recovery partition. He said they couldn't do that because the recovery partition had been corrupted. So that's two …

I think you might be missing my point. If you’re fetching different data, there’s no way of saying whether where or having is faster. You would need to write queries that use each, but retrieve the same data, to see which is faster for a use case. Even then, it totally depends on the data in the database itself. The same query can be fast for some …

I called Best Buy Friday morning to ask about the status of my laptop. I was told the average wait time was one minute. Fifteen minutes later I was told there were eight calls ahead of me and would I like to leave my number for a callback. I did so and after two more hours of waiting I called the local Best Buy direct. I was told my laptop would be…

After I posted this question I noticed that I was missing the raw string indicator and the capture group enclosing parenthesis on the findall, which explains the subscripting error. So, hold off on the answers for now. I'm still having other issues with multiple file runs, though.

The previous unit was a Vivobook 15 X513EA-BH59-CB. The current one is a Vivoboox ASUS K350 2ZA BB51 CB. I'm assuming that the problem with the first unit was not a missing driver because both ASUS and Best Buy (Geek Squad) could not get it working.

I hate to tell you this, but Google *hates* web directories and none rank anymore. Gone are the days of Yahoo!, Dmoz, etc. I don't want you to waste a lot of time because I personally don't feel you'll be able to sell a lot of these. There are some paid models that still exist today, such as The Yellow Pages, Yelp, and Angi. I would browse sites…

There are already about a trillion sites that do exactly that. If you want that do make money from users, build a site that signs them up for all other business directories for a one time fee. If you want to make money from marketing, you will have to get a high domain authority (DA) score for your site so that users are encouraged to sign up…

Registry files can be restored manually via MS-DOS prompt. System.dat and user.dat (in windows directory) are current registry and system.da0 and user.da0 are backed up ones (every restart backs them up). Simply by replacing them you would restore your registry to the state it was when you last shut down/rebooted your machine properly. I …

A program that runs on the development computer but not on other computers normally indicates there are one or more missing DLLs on the computer that it don't run on. And that is usually because the program was compiled for debug, not release. Recompile both the application and DLL for release mode and retest to see if that fixes the problem. …

I assume you mean MS-Windows operating system. It all depends on the program, compiler and libraries you used. When you try to run the program on another computer does the os give you some errors, such as missing DLLs? Some compilers let you statically link all libraries so that it doesn't require any DLLs other than standard win32 api functions…
