I've just acquired a Dell laptop, it seems to hate Linux! Touch pad doesn't work properly, Wireless won't connect and it's sooo slow! Works fine with Windows!

.Org is, indeed, the place to download it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Md5sum describes the way to confirm your download is accurate, as
OpenOffice
.Org provides an MD5 checksum for its downloads (highly useful, IMHO).

OpenOffice
is an open source group which branched development from Sun Microsystem's commercial StarOffice suite.
OpenOffice
is most well known for it's compatibility with Microsoft Office for Windows. In other words, both
OpenOffice
and KDE Office are free. ;)

Openoffice
has been in the Apache incubator for long time now. The availability of languages is very poor which to me indicates the state of the package. Most Linux distributions switched to libreoffice soon after oracle got rid of
openoffice
. Also many developers switched to OSF. I am not sure if
openoffice
will ever catch up.

IMHO is the best of those two. I use it for work (which we have Winblows2000 here) and I've never had a compatability issue yet. Once you have it opened up and are working on it, you can barely tell the difference between it and Macro$haft Werd.

OpenOffice
can read and create documents in MS Office file formats. It's not 100% compatible but it's not far from it. In fact it's only advanced macros that really differ.

OpenOffice
is the best. Not that happy with it myself but it's the best out there. MS Works is cheaper than office, and office itself comes in different flavours at different prices. As she's a student she can almost certainly get a very cheap license herself through her university or whatever.
