Hello Daniweb Community, I have recently been thinking about switching from a Wi-Fi connection to a direct connection over ethernet, however when I tried an ethernet connection from my router to my PS4, I calculated the average download speed after about 5 Wi-Fi connection tests and 5 ethernet connection tests and it averaged around the same. So there was no major difference, so what benefits would I have with a ethernet connection? I use my PS4 to listen to [Spotify](http://spotify.com) and sometimes it will drop or lag a bit, as well as when I have more than one person on …

It's very interesting to read that the Playstation 3 might at last have been hacked by the same man who 'jailbroke' the iPhone for the first time. Interesting but not all that much use. I mean, who wants a hacked PS3 anyway? The report to which I've linked says there are a number of reasons someone might want to do this. You could persuade it to play home made games. OK, copy that, it might be interesting. You could play pirated games. Not to be encouraged but I understand the appeal (although a second-hand game is usually so cheap it's …

If you have not used one of these 'universal' programmable remote control devices for a while then prepare yourself for a shock of stellar proportions: this thing is really easy to use. No, I mean it, really easy. One For All rightly claims that it is just a three button process. The first of those buttons is quite aptly labelled 'magic' because that's exactly what appears to happen. Press the 'magic' button, select the type of device you want to control (TV, Set Top Box, DVD, AMP, MP3 or Games Console) and then enter the appropriate generic code for …

I am a budding game programmer trying to get into the industry programming for PS3, Xbox 360. The main problem I see is the need to demonstrate my skills to a potential employer, but without access to Dev kits for the PS3 or Xbox 360, doing this directly is impossible. My question is, what is the best alternative way to show console developers my skills? C++ programming in DirectX for Windows seems close to showing Xbox 360 programming skills, and C++ programming in OpenGL seems relatively close to showing PS3 programming skills. Unfortunately, it seems from web research as if …

Sony’s impenetrable fortress, a.k.a, the PlayStation 3, has been compromised. OzModChips.com just announced their version of a “jailbreak” for the PS3. What they claim to have is a plug-and-play modchip in the form of a USB stick. When plugged into the PS3, it allows an impressive amount of access into the system, most important of all, the ability to backup your retail PS3 discs onto a USB hard-drive, and subsequently, play the backups without the retail disc in the system. Does it really work? Have the hackers really found a way to exploit a weakness in the PS3? Well, it’s …

Polyphony Digital has been working on Gran Turismo 5 for nearly six years, and finally, the game’s November 2010 release date is just around the corner. When the lead designer, Kazunori Yamauchi, told press at E3 that, "We've actually reached a point where we can probably release [GT5] anytime, except that you can also keep working as long as you want to as well, it's just a matter of timing”, what he should have said was that they were trying to cram as much content into the game as possible. Three new features were announced at the recent Gamescom conference …

Kotaku reported a convincing rumor this morning that the new president over at LucasArts, Paul Meegan, has cancelled The Force Unleashed 3 for all platforms. This is an extremely bold move considering his limited, two-month employment at LucasArts. The game was already in production, and it’s likely that the favorable Force Unleashed 2 team leader, former creative-director Haden Blackman, exited late July because he had a sense of what LucasArts was to become under the new leader. To add further insult to all things Unleashed, Kotaku’s source also claims that once The Force Unleashed 2 ships in October, Meegan will …

As more Q1 fiscal reports keep rolling in, it's clear that Sony stands out among the gaming pack, thanks in part to a significant rise is PS3 Sales. Unfortunately, Nintendo and Capcom didn't fare so well. Sony Sony bounced back from a 1st quarter loss of $426 million last year, fueled by increased sales of the PlayStation 3 hardware and software. They finished the quarter ending June 30th with a net income of $295 million, and sales of $18.7 billion. The PlayStation arm of Sony is still reporting an operating loss of $43 million, but it is a significant improvement …

Sony has just put its Linux user base in the dust bin with its newest update that doesn't allow installing another operating system to its popular game console. Thanks, Sony. I'm now making believe that you're going to lose market share because of this. I'm also making believe that this move is another attempt to remove Linux' competitive edge from the marketplace. Your excuse that you, "don't want people tinkering with the system" is bogus. I think I smell a rat. I rat that smells of rainy days, seawater and space needles. In short, I'm looking for a tutorial on how to write a bootloader for the PS3. If there's any experts out there, a few tutorials for …

Most people welcomed the news that the Sony PlayStation 3 was slimming down, both in physical size and in terms of off the shelf pricing. The Linux crowd are not so impressed however. According to SCE president and CEO Kazuo Hirai, the PS3 slim is some 36 percent lighter and 32 percent smaller than the original PS3 but retains the Blu-ray player along with a 120GB hard drive. What it has got rid of, according to reports, is the option to run Linux under an Install Other OS option that is available on the fat PS3. Don't get me wrong, I'm a great fan of the PS3 but not for the gaming which, when compared to the Xbox 360 is in a totally different league in my opinion. Not bad, considering the total number of games …

A typically eloquent contribution from my colleague Happygeek tells us a great deal about the games console wars. Xbox is outselling the PS3 but they're both being trounced by the Wii. So far so good, but my guess is that the Xbox will still be the long-term loser. And I'll tell you why - the PS3 isn't going to be a games console in its next iteration. That's my guess. You'll want a bit of evidence. First let's have a look at a release I received last week. HiFi manufacturer Denon is releasing what it's convinced is a good-value Blu-Ray …

I think we can accept this as being genuine, seeing as how it has come from the Director of PlayStation Network Operations, Eric Lempel, himself. So no more speculation and rumor, the truth is finally out there. In what is, admittedly, a rather short posting Lempel confirms that the update will include the long awaited XMB access in-game to enable players to access the console menu without first having to quit the game they are playing. About time too. I am sure I cannot be …

According to Breese, eight character strong passwords can be brute force broken in just a couple of days by making the most of the Cell processor in the PS3 whereas before it …

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced the availability of the latest system software for the PlayStation 3, finally taking it into V2.00 territory. To be honest it isn't that great a leap forward, although there is one nice new feature: the ability to turn a PS3 system on and off remotely, using a PlayStation Portable via the Remote Play1 function, allowing for a truly mobile partnership between the two systems. Assuming, that is, your PSP has firmware version 3.50 (so none of the naughty rolling back of PSP software to allow game 'backups' to be played) and also assuming that …

Everyone is up-in-the-arms about Nintendo's new console beating Sony's. The sales of the Wii in November (roughly 467,000) are more than double the PS3 sales (147,000), according to NPD. But what most articles about this don't talk about: the PS2 is still winning, and easily. It managed to sell 664,000 Playstation 2 units. That's a lot. Especially for an old console. Why is this so? Many people probably like their PS2s. After all, that's why the Playstation 2 became so popular. The Playstation 3 also costs way too much. The Blu-ray support adds a lot of $$$, and Sony's been …

All 3 major game consoles have been released -- Microsoft's Xbox 360, Nintendo's Wii, and Sony's Playstation 3. Out of all of these, the PlayStation 3 appears to be losing. Why? The previous generation console, the PS2, dominated consoles created by Microsoft and Nintendo. The answer lies in the companies objectives when creating their console. Microsoft basically created something with better graphics, and focused on what was most popular in their previous console: Xbox Live. The graphics aren't a huge leap on all games, but they found what worked. They're doing alright. Nintendo decided to think outside the box. They …
