Hi Guys, I have just finished setting up a brilliant space in which we have a large TV with the following connected to it: PC, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Windows 8.1 Laptop, The only thing missing, is that I am currently using just the basic inbuild TV speakers, which is a bit of a let down with gaming in particular...!! What I want to do is purchase a 5.1 surround sound system (or better) - wireless if possible, to complete the setup. What I dont know though is what sort of thing I should go for... I have …

Nintendo is sitting firmly at the top of the games console tree right now, having just been 'bigged up' by the release of the US sales figures for October which show the Wii on 803,000 and the DS on 491,000. Both well ahead of nearest rival, the Xbox 360 on 371,000. The old, original, Xbox quite unsurprisingly does not feature in the top six list. That said, the PlayStation 2 does, at the bottom, on 136,000. So why mention the Xbox at all then? Simply because the Xbox 360 has yet to manage to sell more units than the original …

First there was a year of hype surrounding Project Natal, but the reality that is Microsoft Kinect has been in my family home for a week now. Everyone from my 10 year old daughter to my retired mother-in-law have played with it, so what's the verdict? Is this the future of motion control gaming or just a flawed imitation of the Nintendo Wii? Let's start at the beginning with what Kinect is not: it's most certainly not a Wii, nor a PlayStation Move for that matter, as it takes a quite different and truly unique approach to the whole motion …

When it was announced at E3 in 2001 that Retro Studios would be developing the (then) next installment in the Metroid series, Metroid Prime, it was shocking to hear that the game would be played from a first person perspective. Considering it was being developed by a third-party studio, rather than by Nintendo, I was already a bit skeptical. It is a series that is taken quite seriously by fans, and they hold it to fairly high standards. When I finally played the game, I was relieved to find that it captured the feel of previous Metroid titles, and for …

As more Q1 fiscal reports keep rolling in, it's clear that Sony stands out among the gaming pack, thanks in part to a significant rise is PS3 Sales. Unfortunately, Nintendo and Capcom didn't fare so well. Sony Sony bounced back from a 1st quarter loss of $426 million last year, fueled by increased sales of the PlayStation 3 hardware and software. They finished the quarter ending June 30th with a net income of $295 million, and sales of $18.7 billion. The PlayStation arm of Sony is still reporting an operating loss of $43 million, but it is a significant improvement …

I'm trying to get my Wii online. I'm trying to enter my router. I have the address as 192.168.1.1 When I enter that, the window comes up. When I leave the user blank and the password as "admin," it does nothing. After 3 tries a window pops up and says "401 Authorization required" Everything I just typed, I've learned in the last 3 hours. I don't know what to do!

The series director Yoshio Sakamoto and two Team Ninja cohorts reveal their intentions and aspirations for the revamp of Nintendo fans' favorite space vixen and her quest for intergalactic peace. In the first video(all fan-subbed by Metroid Database), Sakamoto admits his interest in Samus' human side and strives to create a psychological connection with the audience. In previous games, we are witness to oddly-touching moments between Samus and the embattled Metroid larvae, but he wants …

Sales for the latest Tiger Woods PGA Tour titles from Electronic Arts have plummeted 68% from last years edition of the game and people have begun pointing fingers at the entitled golfer's promiscuity. It sure is easy to pass the buck when the accused is steeping in scandal, but that isn't the only factor at hand. Doug Creutz of Cowan & Company believes Tiger caused permanent damage to the franchise, but he recognizes that he isn't entirely to blame. In a note to investors, he states, “Although this is probably due in part to the fact that last year's version …

At a recent Q&A session in front of investors at E3, Nintendo of America CEO Reggie Fils-Aime adamantly defended the Wii console’s pace to break the record-setting game sale trends of the Playstation 2, claiming that his console is at the “high watermark” of its existence, with software sales numbers topping that of the PlayStation 2, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360 in the current market. Matt Matthews, analyst for Gamasutra, has compiled a data outlook suggesting otherwise, contending that the Wii console has recently reached its software peak. "[Wii software] appears to have hit a plateau in 2009 with sales …

If you thought that gaming was all about next generation technology, HD graphics or innovative input systems think again. If the results of a survey into console usage in the US during 2008 is anything to go by, it would appear that gameplay is still in charge. The Nielsen research shows that more people were playing with their old PlayStation 2 that their new PlayStation 3. Heck, it showed that more people were playing with that PS2, in terms of the number of minutes spent using a console throughout the year, than the Nintendo Wii or the Xbox 360. Rather …

File under strange but true. It would appear that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second has been presented with a specially commissioned gold-plated Nintendo Wii games console by THQ as part of a marketing campaign for some new game. The rather loose connection between British royalty and the game in question is that it is called 'Big Family Games' and you don't get much bigger than the British Royal Family. THQ product manager Danielle Robinson says "The Royal Family is arguably the most important family in the country so we felt that they had to have a copy of the …

According to the latest figures to be released, it would seem that as far as gamers in the UK are concerned Nintendo is the bees knees grabbing nearly half the market. The ELSPA numbers show that the Wii managed to increase game software sales by 112 percent over the previous year to hit a total of 20.1 million sold. Only just behind was the DS with some 19.1 million games. Add it all up and you get, if my math is correct, 39.2 million Nintendo games sold in the UK during 2008. Not bad, considering the total number of games …

Bloomberg is out with a story this week saying IBM will lay off 16,000 more employees, on top of the 15,000 the firm has already cut. Since economic recovery usually lags job losses, it’s another morbid sign that we’re still in the teeth of this economic hurricane. Note also that the IBM numbers won’t be counted in the lousy jobs number coming out from the U.S. Labor Department later this week – that’s how bad things are getting. I’m also hearing rumors from Microsoft insiders that more layoffs are coming to Seattle, too. Elsewhere, the stock market seems to have …

But CNBC found an inside source who claims the deal is not complete and may not happen, at least until a new Yahoo CEO is in place. That is said to be a personal objective of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, CNBC reports. This story should be breaking mainstream by Monday morning on the East Coast and I’ll keep an …

A typically eloquent contribution from my colleague Happygeek tells us a great deal about the games console wars. Xbox is outselling the PS3 but they're both being trounced by the Wii. So far so good, but my guess is that the Xbox will still be the long-term loser. And I'll tell you why - the PS3 isn't going to be a games console in its next iteration. That's my guess. You'll want a bit of evidence. First let's have a look at a release I received last week. HiFi manufacturer Denon is releasing what it's convinced is a good-value Blu-Ray …

I was always told not to wee in the pool, but Kitajima had his Wii in the gym so that's OK then. Apparently, the Olympic swimmer included playing games on the Wii as part of his training routine to prepare for the Olympic Games. Now you are probably thinking he was using that Wii Fit thing, but no, Kitajima reckons he played Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games instead. "Mario does the breaststroke. And thus, …

Here’s a factoid that might interest you. The one-day record holder for a movie premiere is Spiderman 3, which brought in $59 million in ticket sales on its opening day. The one-day record for a video game – Grand Theft Auto IV – earned $310 million on its opening day. Last year, video game sales finally surpassed Hollywood, and is now an $18.8 billion behemoth – a 40% increase from 2006. Studies show that 68% of Americans play video games, and I’m saying that it’s no coincidence that the video game industry has skyrocketed since the launch of Nintendo’s Wii. …

There can be no doubting that the Nintendo Wii, despite the still extremely silly name even after living with it for a couple of months, has been something of a gaming revolution. Not because of the power of the console, Nintendo has no gone down the Hi-Def, triple core, HD-DVD, Blu-ray, yada yada yada path of Microsoft and Sony, and it has done sales little harm. Nope, this revolution is being backed by good old fashioned fun. The factor that has all but been somehow forgotten in the competitive rush to be crowned kings of gaming hardware, it would seem …

Who needs the Wiimote? ...when there's laptops. But, you say, you can't wave laptops around to control your videogame! Actually you can. Many laptops manufactured now come with motion sensors to suddenly freeze the hard disk when it gets bumped around. These sensors can be read by software, which you can use to control software such as computer games running on the laptop. Sorry, Macs only. Motion sensing laptops are nothing new. Apple's patented Sudden Motion Sensor technology has been inside PowerBooks since 2005, and is now standard in all of their new laptops. IBM had this technology even earlier, …

Everyone is up-in-the-arms about Nintendo's new console beating Sony's. The sales of the Wii in November (roughly 467,000) are more than double the PS3 sales (147,000), according to NPD. But what most articles about this don't talk about: the PS2 is still winning, and easily. It managed to sell 664,000 Playstation 2 units. That's a lot. Especially for an old console. Why is this so? Many people probably like their PS2s. After all, that's why the Playstation 2 became so popular. The Playstation 3 also costs way too much. The Blu-ray support adds a lot of $$$, and Sony's been …

All 3 major game consoles have been released -- Microsoft's Xbox 360, Nintendo's Wii, and Sony's Playstation 3. Out of all of these, the PlayStation 3 appears to be losing. Why? The previous generation console, the PS2, dominated consoles created by Microsoft and Nintendo. The answer lies in the companies objectives when creating their console. Microsoft basically created something with better graphics, and focused on what was most popular in their previous console: Xbox Live. The graphics aren't a huge leap on all games, but they found what worked. They're doing alright. Nintendo decided to think outside the box. They …

Sony used to have game. Its hold on the console market anything but inscrutable, being down to a long standing dedication to technical innovation, game play and pricing. But could that all be due to change following the debut of the PlayStation 3, dubbed PayStation, at E3 last week? Not only does Sony appear to have lost the pricing plot, but technical specs leave much to be desired as well. Let’s start at the bottom, bottom line that is. At $599 the PS3 will be far and away the most expensive games console money can’t buy. The industry insider talk …
