So... this happened at a LAN party. A friend was pestering me for Linux Mint. For some reason YUMI wouldn't recognize my flash drive, so I did it the manual way. sudo dd if=./linuxmint-17.1-cinnamon-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=1M However, it should have been: sudo dd if=./linuxmint-17.1-cinnamon-64bit.iso of=/dev/sdd bs=1M It's an ADD/mental auto-pilot sort of thing. So... the first 1.4G of my 1TB Windows 8.1 drive has been written over with a Linux Mint installer. Before, there was a 100M recovery partition and then the rest was the OS Partition. But now there's only 1 partition: the bloody installer. I'm fairly certain it's …

Hello, I just installed Ubuntu as a second OS on my system on a different drive than my Windows installation. But now, whenever I try and boot the windows installation, I get a blue screen saying that Windows couldn't load winload.exe. This error persists even when I unplug the hard drive that Ubuntu is installed on. I had this error once before a few weeks ago (When I only had Windows installed), and that time just unplugging all my other hard drives and rebooting worked fine. This fix does not work now. I'd love to follow the instructions on screen …

Microsoft is just about over the three day hump that has been their timid Windows 8 release, and amid the [cries of anger](http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/windows-vista-and-windows-7-8/news/438107/windows-8-launch-three-year-user-backlash-predicted) over die-hard user, it's apparent Microsoft's move toward Windows 8 was one for the long term, not the short time. ![Win8-logo1](/attachments/small/3/Win8-logo1.jpg "align-left") While some jump to call the move a failure, it's important to note this is not a Microsoft failure, and instead a change in direction. Microsoft has indeed sold failed products before, ie. Vista and Windows Me, and Windows 8 is not one of those products. While it may be lacking Media Center in an …

![inline-2-windows-8-logo-pgram](/attachments/small/3/inline-2-windows-8-logo-pgram.jpg "align-left") It's been a month since Windows 8, and if you've been using the new OS you're likely going through a period of confusion over the new Modern UI interface, as well as wondering if there's anything you're missing out on. The Windows 8 experiene is significantly different from Windows 7 because of its new Modern UI interface, the lack of start button, introduction of more advanced gestures, and a variety of other cosmetic and user-oriented changes. Here are some must-have applications and programs that will give you back some of the essential features you need with Windows 8, …

I have a computer that came preloaded with windows 8, and I have noticed that when I leave it on without using it for a while (maybe 15 mins, haven't actually timed it) it will say that I am connected to the internet with internet access, but when I try to use it it displays that I have no internet connection in the browser. If I run the windows diagnosis from the network & sharing center it says that there is no problem with the internet. Then I click search for online solutions and it says I need to connect …

Microsoft knows it has to do something in order to claw back some kind of market position, not now but five years into the future. The culture of computing is changing amongst the young and hip consumer, and it's moving away from the Microsoft Windows-centric vision of the past. While Microsoft remains buoyant within the enterprise, powering business globally with plenty of success, the Seattle tech giant would do well to realise that even this core part of the corporate plan is not immune to the generation now effect. What consumers want today can, indeed almost certainly does, influence how …

Hello, I support a large VB5 application which is installed and running on a number of windows PC's around the world on versions up to win 7. I have installed it on windows 8 and whilst the program starts, it fails with error 70 in a number of places. On checking the code I find it is the calling of sndkeys that is failing. This is used to position the user in the correct place on the form that is open. If I leave out the call the program appears to work. We are currently carrying out further testing to …

I know apache exists, and the WAMPP, but i would like to know the handler settings for PHP on Windows 8 IIS, it would really be helpful. I was thinking it might be the same as with windows 7, but i am not getting the mapping parts.

I am designing an online-radio Windows 8 app that will have all these radio channels that can be streamed online. so, my question is: How can I find the streaming URL of an online radio? These URLs are generally hid behind Flash players or ActivX elements. Google results say I can use URL Sniffers to get these URLs but none of these URL Sniffing softwares work on Windows 8.

I have a tale of woe to tell which is all the worse because of Microsoft's abject failure to put things right. On the first day it became available (26th Oct), I started the Windows 8 Pro download upgrade process. It's only £24.99 from here in the UK. On my first attempt, when prompted to enter payment details, I used my debit card. The response was an error message saying that the payment could not be processed and the software wouldn't go any further. So I then resorted to using my Paypal account to acquire two keys and a backup …

Microsoft failed to make tablets work with Windows for PEN Computing twenty years ago, so why are some people saying that it is set to dethrone the iPad later this year? Can Windows 8 really prove to be a commercial threat to iOS? I still have my Compaq Concerto from 1992, which is generally accepted as the first ever mainstream Tablet PC. It ran Windows for PEN Computing Version 1, which was actually just Windows 3.1 with some rather rudimentary pen input add-ons included. Although I have sentimental reasons for hanging on to the world's first real commercial tablet, I …
