Nintendo is sitting firmly at the top of the games console tree right now, having just been 'bigged up' by the release of the US sales figures for October which show the Wii on 803,000 and the DS on 491,000. Both well ahead of nearest rival, the Xbox 360 on 371,000. The old, original, Xbox quite unsurprisingly does not feature in the top six list. That said, the PlayStation 2 does, at the bottom, on 136,000. So why mention the Xbox at all then? Simply because the Xbox 360 has yet to manage to sell more units than the original …

The cost of an Xbox 360 is dropping like a brick, which is just as well considering so many things can go wrong with the Microsoft games console. In fact the whole Red Rings of Death thing has led to some frustrated users taking Microsoft to court. Jesse Maiman, a Yale University student, is also going to court over an Xbox 360 but his lawsuit is not against Microsoft and his console is not broken as far as he knows. It is, however, missing. Maiman boarded a US Airways flight from Connecticut to Cincinnati with the Xbox 360 packed in …

These days, video game consoles aren't just for video games anymore. There's a CD, DVD and Blu-Ray player, internet, Twitter, Facebook, chat and more. But don't you wish you could watch MOVIES? Oh, wait, you can. Think the way you watch movies on your console is good enough? One company challenges consumers to think again. FlicStick Corp announced today that they will be releasing their patent pending "FlicStick Movie System." For me, that name means slapping obnoxious people with a ruler when they talk during my movie. For you, that could mean a new way to watch your favorite flicks. …

I am a budding game programmer trying to get into the industry programming for PS3, Xbox 360. The main problem I see is the need to demonstrate my skills to a potential employer, but without access to Dev kits for the PS3 or Xbox 360, doing this directly is impossible. My question is, what is the best alternative way to show console developers my skills? C++ programming in DirectX for Windows seems close to showing Xbox 360 programming skills, and C++ programming in OpenGL seems relatively close to showing PS3 programming skills. Unfortunately, it seems from web research as if …

Product Review Halo: Reach Review

This is it. You’ve aged that cache of Mountain Dew Game Fuel in your finished basement for three years since Halo 3. You bit the bullet on your purchase of Halo: ODST to find out it was as tame as you had expected. You took another one on the chin with Halo Wars, which was a cheaper gimmick than Lion King toys in a McDonald's Happy Meal (stupid Ensemble Studios). The wait for redemption is finally here. The golden child to a decade’s long culmination of gaming’s premier and most coveted franchise has arrived. Ladies and gentlemen, Halo: Reach has …

Xbox Live is a breeding ground for hateful, inflammatory remarks of all genders, races, creeds, and sexualities, where aimless insecurities are flung around like rocks at street signs. Who would have thought that it would be Microsoft doing the discriminating for once? A 26-year-old gamer from Fort Gay, West Virginia was banned momentarily from his monthly membership when Microsoft enforcement officials deemed his profile inappropriate. His crime? Listing himself as a proud resident of "fort gay WV." "At first I thought, 'Wow, somebody's thinking I live in the gayest town in West Virginia or something.' I was mad. ... …

Kotaku reported a convincing rumor this morning that the new president over at LucasArts, Paul Meegan, has cancelled The Force Unleashed 3 for all platforms. This is an extremely bold move considering his limited, two-month employment at LucasArts. The game was already in production, and it’s likely that the favorable Force Unleashed 2 team leader, former creative-director Haden Blackman, exited late July because he had a sense of what LucasArts was to become under the new leader. To add further insult to all things Unleashed, Kotaku’s source also claims that once The Force Unleashed 2 ships in October, Meegan will …

Xbox Live’s third annual Summer of Arcade, presenting the biggest and best smash hits of the season, kicks off today with the release of Limbo. A short description on the Xbox Live Marketplace leads way into a marvelously morose journey: “Uncertain of his sister's fate, a boy enters LIMBO.” That’s it. There is no before, no after, no rhyme or reason as to why you awake in a wind-swept meadow where everything wants you dead. Premonitions of your sister haunt you, leading you from beginning to end across the puzzles and platforms of a title that you won’t soon forget. …

No doubt, by now you have heard of Microsoft’s latest addition to their Xbox 360, the Kinect controller-less …uhh controller. Instead of a standard handheld controller, the Kinect is a stationary sensor bar that sits in front of your TV. While the Kinect has been compared to the Nintendo Wii’s vastly popular motion controller, it eliminates the concern of launching your controller through your TV during a harried round of Wii Tennis. Taking lethargy a step further, Kinect also allows you to control media on your XBOX 360 with verbal commands like “Xbox, Play” or intuitive hand gestures such as …

Sales for the latest Tiger Woods PGA Tour titles from Electronic Arts have plummeted 68% from last years edition of the game and people have begun pointing fingers at the entitled golfer's promiscuity. Doug Creutz of Cowan & Company believes Tiger caused permanent damage to the franchise, but he recognizes that he isn't entirely to blame. This is the first time Milo has been discussed since the E3 event held in 2009. Molyneux’s goal is to, "…introduce a new revolution in storytelling." He even believes that his pet project will set the course for a revolution in the way we interact with media. "Films, TV, even hallowed books, are just rubbish because they …

Gamers have got to love the E3 Expo, especially Microsoft gamers who are into the social side of the Xbox experience. If they happen to be obsessed with Twitter as well as Xbox Live then Microsoft had some good news to announce for them at E3: a Twitter client for the Xbox 360 with that all important Xbox Live look and feel to the interface. First the good news: the GTA IV downloadable content expansion pack 'The Lost and Damned' has broken the world record for downloaded content, assuming such a record exists. Microsoft is not putting any numbers to the claim, but it is shouting from the roof tops that the GTA IV DLC from "Rockstar Games eclipsed first-day revenue for all previous downloadable content on Xbox LIVE." It is being a little less vocal about the bad news: for many players the expansion pack simply stinks. Actually, it sucks elephants through a straw. Backwards. I should know, because I am one such player. …

According to the latest figures to be released, it would seem that as far as gamers in the UK are concerned Nintendo is the bees knees grabbing nearly half the market. The ELSPA numbers show that the Wii managed to increase game software sales by 112 percent over the previous year to hit a total of 20.1 million sold. Only just behind was the DS with some 19.1 million games. Add it all up and you get, if my math is correct, 39.2 million Nintendo games sold in the UK during 2008. Not bad, considering the total number of games …

Microsoft has just announced the release of a Windows Live instant messaging client for its Xbox 360 game console, giving gamers the capability of chatting to their PC friends. There was already a video and voice chat feature via Xbox Live, but this feature enables players to connect with up to 6 people at a time on their Windows Live contact lists. Microsoft says there's currently 260 million people using the Windows Live instant messaging service. One hitch remains: just how in the world are users going to be able to enter text with their controllers? Microsoft says they're going …

Microsoft has already created a new "version" or "model" of their Xbox 360 console, dubbed "Elite". Aside from its black color and matching headset and wireless controller, it's not that much different, but it has a few important upgrades:

They've upgraded the hard drive to make it a whole 120 gigabytes. This is important when you're storing content downloaded from the ever-growing Xbox Live service.

They've also added high-definition output for you to watch on your widescreen TV. At the moment, the only high-def cable it supports is HDMI.

Although the console gives high-definition output, it still doesn't come …

Once again, Microsoft is pushing forward their domination by applying the successful techniques in the gaming industry to the PC world. What is it this time? Xbox Live. Microsoft has announced that they plan to make this service available for PCs, too. This is exciting news, for several reasons. Microsoft's Xbox Live has proven quite successful over the years, and was one of the core reasons why the original Xbox remained popular over the years. So if it's popular in the console world, won't it be a hit with the PCs? But this is a lot more than a quality …

According to Engadget, the second version of the Xbox 360, code-named "Zephyr" has had a photo leaked from a Xbox insider. It looks quite interesting; the only picture provided was a backside of the console. It's still white, but has some extra ports on the back. It seems like Microsoft really likes names that start with the end of the alphabet. For example, remember the original code name for the Xbox 360? Xenon. Now, it's Zephyr. Xbox. DirectX. Need I say any more? It doesn't seem like the processor brand has changed, although the size sure has. The Zephyr will …
