Hi Folks,
This is my first post.( I had put this posting in the wrong forum and I'm trying to delete it, my apologies) Whilst using Firefox today i seem to have picked up a home page hijacker and some really annoying advertising stuff which i cant get rid of.
The hi jacker has infected IE, not Firefox, which works alright.
But IE keeps sending me here: http://www.uptodatesecurity.com/
Also in the system tray I get an annoying icon which keeps telling me I have a virus, when I click on it i go here:http://www.adwarepunisher.com/?aff=101
I have kapersky anti virus and anti hacker software, which didn't stop this infection; neither can it detect it, or remove it.
I have run hijackthis this is the report:

I have tried to delete 02 BHO: Homepage BHO..but it wont go. As we speak 'adprotect v 6.2 has decided all my personal information is at 'risk' on my computer, more annoying things that i seem to have caught.
I had something like this a long time ago, and in the end i had to reinstall the system. this cured it but it was a pain.
Can any one give me some advice on what to do?
Thanx for your time.

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :). You have been bitten by Smitfraud.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Can also be downloaded from here; http://www.downloads.subratam.org/smitRem.exe
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

===================================================
O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {e0103cd4-d1ce-411a-b75b-4fec072867f4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp74F1.tmp

===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Hi Crunchie
Thanx for your help. I followed your list of instructions, and so far the home page hijacker seems to have gone along with all the adverts and virus warnings. I will list all the logs that i manged to save. I did try to save the ewido report, but i seem to have lost it in the safe mode. I tried to save it to the desk top, but when i restarted the computer in normal mode it wasn't there. The smitfile report wasn't saved to desktop either, i found this in C. So apologies for not including the ewido report. Perhaps it's saved somewhere else.
In the panda active scan. althought it found some undesirable objects, i could not delete them. I could not find the auto clean checkbox to tick in the window that opened. So they remain uncleaned.
Any way after several houre of prcessing so far i appear to have my system back. Here are all the repotrs i have:

In the ewido log, there was three objects; 2 cookies and , something called 'chikita' not sure of the spelling there. They were all deleted.
It appears that the problem has been dealt with, as so far i have my home page back and there continues to be nothing in the system tray telling me that I have been infected, or anything similar opening in IE.
Perhaps you could advise me how to avoid this problem in future, as my antivirus seemed to be powerless to prevent this attack.
Thanks again
Kwisj

Can you please do the following.

Uninstall the version of Java Runtime Environment you have at the moment, then go to the Sun website and download and install the latest version.

Scan with HiJackThis, then check(tick) the following, if present:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Update Service] C:\ARCHIV~1\ARCHIV~1\TEKNUM~1\update.exe /startup O4 - Global Startup: Kaspersky Anti-Hacker.lnk = ?

 O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{50B9CB79-6D6F-484E-9645-1B95DD2558BD}: NameServer = 195.5.64.2,195.5.64.6 O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{89589B73-FF23-4421-8EB7-59BD04F0C2CC}: NameServer = 80.58.61.250,80.58.61.254

...(Verify that these ip addresses are for your isp's DNS Servers, if so, don't 'fix' these.)

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\ARCHIV~1\ARCHIV~1\TEKNUM~1

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

Reboot.

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Hi crunchie,
thanks for the reply. I have follewed them to the letter. Things that i couldn't do:
find c:\ archiv -1\archiv-1\teknum-1
I have view all folders selected in the folder options, but still no luck.
My kapersky firewall has turned itself off, so i have switched the windows one on. What do you recommend here?
