It's an Acer Aspire 5610. Lovely machine. Until now, had it a few months no problems. Logged in today around 5pm, and it says "USB device malfunctioned".. the only usb device i had was my mouse, which i've been using since i bought it. So that struck me as odd.

Carried on using it, internet (wireless), WMPlayer, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and IE all running. Went to get a drink at around 6:45pm whilst it logged into GMail. Come back and it's off. turn it back on (it's running off the mains) and it checks disk and tells me

\progam files\Norton Antivirus\strt\oo144-~.tmp is not a valid size.
\progam files\Norton Antivirus\strt\oo414-~.tmp is not a valid size.

thats the onl;y problems (exact numbers in file name were probably different but very similar.) and it "fixed" them. So i logged in, kept off the net. Opened Norton and did a disk clean up as well as checking the file path (found one more temp file there thats it) and tried to open Norton Reports, see if something had got me and it went off again.

turn back on, not connected to mains, no mouse and it finds a bunch of dodgy temp files (as it cut out half way through the cleanup) and another norton file. Log in on the other account, no interent again and try and ad-aware scan. 7 minutes it was on for (in total) and it went off again. Now it's downstairs and i'm on my brothers pc( which sucks compared to the laptop). Could it be overheating? Seems abit odd to just start.

I guess booting in safe mode would be the first check, which i will try tomorrow (to makes sure it has cooled down incase it's simple overheating). But has anyone had this problem? Or know a possible solution? please help i love that machine

I don't know if it's virus or hardware, scans recently (before today) have come up clean

" ...see if something got me...." -chances are it did. Do this for a start...
===hijackthis: http://216.180.233.162/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
-install it to a new folder alongside your program files
-in that folder start HijackThis by dclicking the .exe; now close ALL other applications and any open windows including the explorer window containing HijackThis.
-Click the Scan and Save a Logfile button. Post the log here.

I think thats what you wanted. Well today it stayed on long enough to do that. And when i say "goes off" i mean straight off, no warning, nothing just boom black and powers gone like the battery's been taking out. I also vaccumed the fan as it might have been stuck or something. also tried system restore, one back a week, one back a month and it failed both times :-\ . Uninstalled Netbeans IDE, and Visual Express C++ and Web Deveopler as i installed both of them recently (in the last month)

well, that log is clean. So the file problems being reported look like being all due to improper shutdown. I'd ask you to do a Panda online scan for viruses [a few of which have are known to periodically shut down computers] but seven minutes would barely get the scan under way. It's really looking like a hardware problem, but 7 mins to shutdown is a rather catastrophic component failure mode. The sort of thing a power supply is good at doing [various outputs are monitored by the ps itself -they go out of range it shuts down immediately]. I'm afraid that i'm not being much help.... I hope someone else comes in with ideas. Good luck...

thanks anyway, appriciated. well it stayed on for three hours yesterday, normal shutdown when i told it to. and 2 hours today so i guess it was just overheating?

wow.. im having that same problem.. did u finaly fix it?? what was wrong with ur acer.. hope its not terminal! similar problem happend to my old hp laptop.. turned out it was a fried mother board.. but that laptop was over used.. i thnk mine mite be over heating.. of the fan is sum how being blocked. would appreciate some advice. thanks.

HI! I have just bought the exact same laptop Acer 5610 and what do you know, the other day it turned itself off! no warning at all just like you describe. When I restarted it did it again. It's been fine since. But that one time it couldn't have over heated cos it'd only just come on and was only web browsing, whereas i've previously used it for hours worth of audio recording with no probs.

Did anyone get to the bottom of this? can't be a coincidence surely!

nothing comes up on avast/avg/s&d scans that is out of the ordinary and it acts as if nothing happened when i reboot...

hmmm

I have the same laptop, and I have spoken to a few other people who have the one too. We all have the same problem!

It is definitely overheating; the problem is this:

When the laptop is working normally, the fan comes on every 2 minutes or so and the CPU temperature varies between 35-50C. Every now and then, for an unknown reason, the fan does not go on, the laptop gets hotter and hotter and eventually it cuts out.

It seems to be worse under high load or when hot. The fan can sometimes be restarted by blowing hard of sticking a vacuum onto the heat vent.

You can measure the temperature by Googling Speedfan, and downloading the program.

Unfortunately fan control on this model appears to be completly automated, you can't use the BIOS or do it through the OS.

If anyone knows a solution please please post it!

I have done some more research into this and it seems the most likely problem is a broken bearing in the fan. Every now and then, the bearing locks, preventing the fan from spinning and causing the laptop to overheat. As far as I can tell this is a batch problem with this particular laptop.

So there are two options; replace the fan, or live with it.

I am using Speedfan to monitor the temperatures; when it gets hot, either gently shaking the laptop or blowing air into the fan can usually get it going.

Sometimes running the laptop in a different orientation can help, like on its side.

If anyone has any more information, please post.

hi. same problem, only my core temps spend a lot of time in the 60s and touch on 70C every now and then. defo the problem. got in touch with acer, turns out i didnt register my laptop so trying to findproof of purchase then i'll send it off. i'll keep u posted

ok they say turn off automatic updates. if that doesnt help do a system recovery by pressing f10 when you see the acer logo. if that doesnt work book it in.

i reckon its just them stalling, doesnt seem to me that will really help, as we have kind of worked out its hardware related.

either way i'll give it a go

I had a similar problem with my acer 5114 WLMI or whatever, it kept turning itself off in the middle of anything without any warning signs. But then I started noticing it was heating up before cutting power, so I figured it must have some sort of safety switch for when it's too hot, and so I opened it up and saw that it was full of dust inside. First I removed the battery, then the covering and then I unscrewed the fan . I removed most of the dust, put the fan back in and the covering back on and turned the notebook on. After that it stopped turning itself off all the time.

Hi I'm currently repairing an Acer Aspire 3005WLMi and have stumbled across a similar problem. It appears in my case the battery pack, power adapter and fan have all failed, not however all the time hence the reason I'm here.
Is it possible for power supply, battery and fan all to fail in this way?

Problem 1: Laptop powers on gets to logon and dies.
Problem 2: Battery wont charge under XP so ultimately dies.
Problem 3: Removing hard drive allows laptop to sit at missing os, battery charges and power stays on. After 20 mins, approx, the heat coming from the laptop is terrible and should have caused a shutdown even though no os was running. It did'nt and would almost certainly have caused a fire.

I've repaired mainy pcs and laptops and have come across 1 of the problems listed in most but never have I come across this before.

The fan and vent were clogged before start and cleaned. No difference.
I dissassembled the unit checking each part in turn, hardrive, ram and wifi all work without errors in other laptop. There is no hairline crack identifiable in mobo.

Reading.. it is possibly just PS and fan. But I can only guess.

My guess too. I have ordered a ps and am about to order a fan.
I suspect there may be some sort of flaw with the Aspire model though.

Guys,

I have exactly the same proplam with my aspire 5612ZWLMi (probably doesnt mean anything to you but it's right in front of me anyways hahah)

It's incredibly annoying, however isnt as bad as some of the problems reported here. It happens completely randomly, say, comes up once every now and again, but has bad patches. for instance, it hasnt done it for months, but today it's done it about 8 times sometimes only giving me a few minutes time after loading up.

I dont really know what to try, i mean either way im a software guy myself so don't trust myself opening it up. It was a present from me mum too so i just really dont want to mess it up. The best guess i have is that i was using a desktop PC before this (that i broke) that i, almost literally, never turned off. I just think that this computer isnt built to keep up that pace. I also, well me and my bro, leave it charging for very long periods sometimes even when it's fully charged which cant be doing it much good.

I kind of answered my own question there somewhat. I dont mean to sound stupid, because the best solution is probably just to ease off it a bit, but are there any more practical ways off stopping this from happening??

much love

calmac

I have the exact same problem as well! The past two days its been doing it and it originally started when I was watching something through my laptop! Then I kept on booting it up and it would only last for a few minutes.

My laptop is the Acer Aspire 6920 series.

However today it has been on for nearly 5 hours running of mains and it's working fine! So I am wondering whether this is overheating as well ...

My guess too. I have ordered a ps and am about to order a fan.
I suspect there may be some sort of flaw with the Aspire model though.

Just an update really. I replaced fan, ps and eventually the dc jack.
This resolved the problem briefly for a month or so when the new fan failed. Again the machine was over heating to such an extent that I slightly burned myself. Again the machine didn't shut down. Anyway I built my customer another laptop from parts from diffferent Acer laptops which I'm pleased to say is still going fine.

I still think there is a flaw with some of the Aspire models, but I think it maybe something to do with the software that controls the power. This software regulates/monitors the flow of power to the fan, monitor and battery. This is only my conclusion and not something I've been told by Acer.

i have the same problem on a acer aspire 6920 sexy machine n it turns out that it only switches off when it gets hot, i think its probably the heat is too much for the little fan to put out

You need to begin with the steps given in this sticky
http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread134865.html
complete all the scans as noted there and then begin your OWN thread noting your problems and including all the scan logs. Since this thread is 3 years old there is slim chance you will receive definitive answers to solve your problems in this one. A key rule here is never piggy back your question in another persons thread, makes things too confusing and then nobody receives the proper help they need. So do the steps given and then create your own new thread by clicking the Start New Thread Button on the upper left and somebody will be most happy to offer solutions.

hi
I think this is a acer thing becouse mine is aspire 5310 and it also turns off on its own. They must over heat really qwick as mine can be off all night and when i switch on in the morning within half an hour its turned itself off....

Hello,
Thank you all for your comments and reports.
I am currently repairing an Acer Aspire 3005WLMi and the same problem occurs : It shuts down without warning.
As a professional I thought it was overheating of the CPU and the BIOS protects overburning of it by shutting down the computer automatically.
But I still needed to find out because I let the computer off untill it had cooled down, and when I switched it on again already after a few minutes (with Windows intallation) it would shut down.
Now maybe are Acer computers not so good ?!
What I know is that AMD processors get much hotter than Intel processors.
Ok, this is an old computer but the estonishing is that it didn't shut down before I formated and wanted to reinstall Windows. Windows XP was indeed functionning for a long time and did not shut down.
Last idea : Might it be the CD/DVD device that creates heat ?

You do realize this doesn't just have to be a virus/malware issue, right?
There are loads of possibilities to why your System can be shutting down unexpectedly.

Firstly, are you using the correct charger for your laptop? Weird question, yes, however if you have had a broken charger in the past and I don't know, you used a charger from a Acer netbook because it charged your main laptop there may not be enough power flowing through to your laptop, causing it to shutdown. This is a possibility, unless your using a charger designed for your laptop/the charger you got when you bought it. Netbooks need less power than laptops. Laptops need more power because of the better performance.

Secondly, when you boot up after it restarting or shutting down unexpectly, does Windows return a popup to you about a "unexpected shutdown"? If so, it may be due to a Windows crash, application or failure to update something.

Thirdly, it may not be anything software related at all. It could be a hardware issue. In the past I have had laptops which get a hardware issue, causing the laptop to randomly shutdown no matter to what im doing. I could be listening to music, working in Photoshop/programming or just chatting to friends on Skype. Are your USB ports working properly? Sometimes if they aren't fully working and you plug something into them, the computer will instantly shutdown. I've had this before, especially if you plug a USB in the wrong way. This may also cause a break of the USB port. Is your motherboard damaged? Another reason to why your laptop may be shutting down randomly may be because of a hardware issue with the BIOS. Open up your laptop and check for any connection problems, or breaks in the motherboard.

Hope I helped!
