The distro has nothing to do with it. Any Linux distribution will do. Just install this:

Well, here's mine, I think its pretty average. I have to completely switch to linux, I know, it just takes time.

Not until Vista as far as I know

or you can try a live cd (boots straight from the CD so you don't actually install the OS). It won't touch your Windows install at all

This link is to a mirror for Kororaa (it is no longer officially distributed by them because they aren't really allowed to include proprietary ATi and nVidia drivers), you just need a fairly decent nVidia or ATi graphics card and preferebly >256MB RAM.

or you can get the public beta

i don't think the beta (or rc1) has xgl/compiz pre-installed cos of the drivers not being open issue.

oh right, so i just put the disk in and it boots from there without messing up windows - where can i get one from?

then just burn the disk image, heres how to do it in nero, i'd imagine other cd burning apps are pretty similar

then just put it in and reboot, and hopefully in a couple of mins you will have a nice 3d eye candy desktop. It may not run quite as fast/smooth as a installed one, i dunno i've not tried it - it should give you an indication though

By the way, a really neat way to create desktop backgrounds is to take screenshots of the iTunes visualizer while you're playing music. Here's my desktop now: [EDIT] darn that upload didn't work

Current which I've not had time to fix up since re-installing about a month ago.

You folks have some fine looking desktops. My desktop sort of changes with my mood, coming from a file I keep full of photographs I trip across on the net--- such as this one.

The second desktop is a little revealing. At the bottom of the screen, you'll see the app I keep handy for dealing with all these icons for the "important" stuff I dare not put into any folder, as well as the shortcuts I can't bear to be without. One touch changes what I see... This is running WinXP SP2 Home Ed. as an O.S. on a desktop PC...

You wouldn't believe that this desktop is over a year old by just looking at it. I keep the icons hidden and the icon tray clean. I can't sit stand sitting down to a messy computer.
