I have received emails and calls from my ISP recently claiming that I am using the connection to download copyrighted torrents. I didn't recognize the files listed, but I removed all my torrent programs and potentially shady freeware apps as a preventive measure. I then ran checks on my machines in order to remove all potential nasties. This was last Tuesday that I did all this. Today, I receive a new notice informing me of infractions that occurred last Friday. I am completely befuddled, please help me with my logs for both machines and see if you can find anything suspicious. Thank you very much.

FYI: I am on a static IP, and I know for a fact that neither system has torrents running on them or even a client with which to download torrents.

Machine # 2 apears to be clean. But # 1 has a trojan.

First run HJT and place a checkmark next to the following.

Now use My Computer to navagate to the following files/folders and delete them if present.
%WINDIR%\crcspider.ico(Windir is probably C:\Windows\ or C:\Windows\System32\. Check them both)

In your next post include a new HJT along with any problems your still having. This trojan was probably picked up from using those torrent and crack sites to get illegal software and other things.

Honestly, it looks like you have already found a solution for using Bittorrent anonymously. If you are honestly not using it then why are you using so many instances of Putty and what appears to be a shell application? This is the ideal way to shield your ip with a few adjustments. But of course there are loads of other reasons for having PuTTY so prominent in your running processes. Is anyone using your wireless via a home network connection? Is it possible that someone is remotely using your PC to download torrents and then move them out via a network connection? How tight is your wireless security?

From what I hear in the forums, crackspider is not the problem. They have a pesky cookie that sticks around and loads into the registry but really doesn't interfere if you delete it. But a lot of the stuff listed on that site is untested and untrusted. If you are looking for trustworthy cracks and the such I would use a P2P system such as Filetopia or Mirc and get your cracks from a trusted name in a user friendly room. A lot of the old hands of filetopia.org are more than happy to recommend the latest and greatest tested and true- if you are into that kinda thing which of course you probably aren't. Those guys are really into keeping a "clean" room and will boot you if you dare to bring infected files inside unknowingly.

I have also heard from TorrentFreak.org that the MPAA and others are setting up fake torrents that are used primarily to collect IP Addresses. Comcast.net is really cracking down so I would be doing the whole shell and proxy shenanigans as well if you were trying to beat them.

It sounds like in your case tho someone is playing with your IP. As the previous person suggested someone may be using your IP as a proxy. But I don't know how that would work considering that if they used your IP then the tracker would try to talk to Your computer and not theirs. I think you need to lock up any possible network leaks and maybe if you have siblings or children you should lock up your room--I personally had a roommate downloading bootlegs without my knowledge and burning them while I was slaving away at work. Once I got that warning - I got suspicious. I mean Vanilla Sky was a movie I dont think I would accept if I was given it, let alone download a dodgy bootleg of it!!! I am completely sure that this confused the bejeezus out of you so good luck!

This actually occurred at my office, and I looked through all the machines for any trace evidence of torrent or other P2P programs. I found nothing. I decided to shut down every machine, including our linux firewall/router and the cable modem, before leaving for the night as a general rule from then on. We got another complaint, showed evidence that our connection wasn't even active, and have not gotten any other complaints since.

I suppose we kept getting hit because we have a static IP. I have since discovered that certain bittorrent clients allow you to manually specify your internet IP, for reasons of correcting false IP identification. I presented this information as evidence of the ability for people to masquerade as someone else, resulting in people being wrongly accused of downloading material that they did not download. I think the ISP tech I sent this information to was quite surprised.

FYI: I have so many instances PuTTY because I'm a web developer, and all the systems I maintain/program are remote Linux systems.
