Hello, a few years ago (about 7 or so) I developed a concept for a website but I had (& still do not have) little to no knowledge on web design... specifically source code. Well I attempted to have the site built by an individual who claimed to have extensive programming & web design knowledge. However, this individual abandoned the project after completing 60% of the project. The site was up & running, but not fully functional. About 5 years ago, a script error surfaced within the code & left the site crippled... if u tried to type in the url (www.Barbercosmoconnect.com) you would only get a blank screen with an error message (now you will get a "site coming soon" screen because I renewed the web hosting fees)... now I am trying to fix this scripting error w/o the webmaster. He left me with the usernames & passwords for the webhosting etc. & I also have a copy of the source code on notepad... I believe that it's css though. Can someone give me advice or help? I recently renewed the hosting, but I don't know how or where to copy & paste the source code (after I fix the script error)... here is a copy of the last bit of code that my webmaster wrote... I need step by step instructions on how to put this code into my web hosting enviroment... oh, I need to find the error within the code first... because my site was effective @ one point in time... before the error...

1. Back up your local copy of the source. Burn it to CD for safe keeping.

2a. Use an FTP client to uploaded the source in its current state. The Godaddy site provides a help on FTP upload.

2b. If the files include .sql exports then there's a good chance that the site uses a database. If so then then you need to re-establish the database and import structure/data from the .sql files. The Godaddy site provides a help on setting up a database.

You now have a version of the site that you and others can view.

3. Identify what is not working and ask specific questions here on Daniweb, with link(s) to problem page(s).

4. In response to Daniweb answers, amend your local copy of the source and re-upload file(s) to the Godaddy server. Safe practise - backup individual lines of code before changing them; backup each file on the server before re-uploading; backup the entire site after each stable bug fix.

If you don't have the knowledge to do all/any of this, then you need to employ someone.

Before you implement Airshow's excellent advice, back up to step 0.

On your hard drive, create a folder. Let's say you're using Windows. Try C:\barcoscon.

Place this code in that folder in a file named "index.html". (When you log onto any site on the web you are opening "index.html". Sign on to "www.amazon.com" and you are actually signing on to "http://www.amazon.com/index.html".)

Now load your favorite browser and choose File/Open ... (maybe it's File/Open File...) and open the file on your hard disk. If it's your site, Hooray! You can now proceed to test/debug. If you don't get a website, you need help.
