Help, using php to search a postgresql db

I am really hoping someone that is a lot smarter than me can help me  I have been given the impossible task of updating our current website.
6 years ago or so I went to uni and touched on PHP etc so far I have managed to revamp the site, and it’s looking pretty good. I have the site connecting to the postgresql database and displaying the results in a table. So far all good, but I need to be able to search the database and this is causing me so much stress!!! So far I have a page called search.php you can input your string and click search, that then opens a page called results.php but I really don’t have a clue how to actually search the database for the inputted value. Can anyone help me or provide me with some examples I can work from?
