Joomla 1.5, rewrite with .htaccess

Hello friends, I try to rewrite links with htaccess, but the server does not change the links.

I want, e.g.. the link
www.example.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=section&id=7&Itemid=54

To be:
www.example.com/cat/7/Item_54

(Or something similar).

My .htaccess file is:

It sounds like you are trying to do what some of the SEF extensions already do. With Joomla, you want to be careful when you modify the core components because you can cause incompatibility with some of the extensions/plugins/components - or loose them during an upgrade.

Some of the SEF extensions actually do break other extensions too, so read the comments associated with them as you search for them.

Hi Im still a newbie in Joomla but somehow with some luck i manage to get the Joomla core SEF to work.. both in local (xampp) and in server
so the steps are:
* Upgrade to the latest version of joomla
* rename the htaccess.txt to .htaccess
* activate all the three SEO settings in site > global configuration

and after i activate that my .htaccess file will looked like this

OMG, I forgot to load mod_rewrite.
Now works great. :)

The htaccess file rewrite cannot change the links on your pages. It is links that define URLs. Once a link is clicked it is too late to change the URL. To change the links you must edit the PHP script that generates those links on the page.

The action of a rewrite is to analyse an incoming URL request after the link is clicked, and to then alter the internal pointer so that it fetches content from some other location inside the server, a location that is different to that initially specified by the path part of the URL.

As a final step you should add a redirect such that whenever any old URL is requested, the server responds with a redirect to the new URL.

The default .htaccess for Joomla 1.5 code is very inefficient.

Here's a replacement file which fixes those problems.
