You are transferring a site, right? So do I understand correctly, that you have a working site, but after you trensferred it to another server you got an error? If so, please give the description of that error, before we can look at your script.

Well basically im using google chrome to transfer the html, css, javascript. I opened up all the files in adobe dreamweaver and it said there was an error in line 3. The code is really complex and im not an expert. So i just need help help fixing it. I can give you the website if you want.

Do you have access to both servers? Did the site work before? If the site did work on the old server, try to use a proper FTP client like FileZilla to download and upload it instead of using a browser.

OK, I see this is a joomla site, and I need you to give me the file name of the error and the url to the site. Your software just say: "error on line 3"?? It does not say anything else?

if all else fails, although it's a "cheap" way to fix your syntax, it could help if you're a beginner... use the w3c validator.

Sorry i've been really busy. The website is Lovel4idaho.org. Yes the program just says error on line 3. The html code is the home page of the website. Yes its a joomla site that's what makes me mad. So what does this firezilla thing do?

Ok at this point can someone just tell me how to copy an entire website? Caus i tried and it looks terrible. By entire i mean pictures javascript css html and anything else.

You tried to "copy" a website, by using your browser download manager to download the files to your computer. The website you are trying to copy, is a Joomla site, and it is using a database to store most of the stuff in tables.

First of all, if you want to "copy" or transfer a site to another hosting server or to your own computer, you must use a ftp client to access the files and folders of the website to dowbload them in the exact order as they are installed on the server. Now, the suggestion was for you to use Filezilla to do this. Filezilla is a free ftp client that you can dowbload and install on your computer, to do this job correctly. You do need the ftp login details to the site to do this.

Secondly, once the files/folders from the site is downloaded to your computer, or to another server, you need to download the database as well, by doing a back-up of the existing one on the old server, and download that back-up to your computer as well. On your computer, or on the new server, you need to create a new database, and import the back-up into it.

Now, once you have done the above, you need to edit the config file with the new data base login settings, and the new path to the site where it is residing now, on your pc or on the new server.

That is how you transfer a site!

Wow thats very complex. So since someone else made it with joomla i need their password right? And then i get firezilla and put it in?

If it is your site, you should have the ftp login details. If it is not your site, and you want to transfer it on behalf of the owner, he/she can provide you with the ftp login details. If it is someone elses site, and you want to "steal" it, I cannot help you. If you want to build yourself a similar site as the one you want to "copy" you can always go to the joomla.org website and download a fresh one from there, and customize it the way you want.

My explanation above sounds complex, but actually it is very easy and fast to do. I transfer sites almost daily to new servers, as part of what I do for a living.

Can i transfer it using XAMPP?

XAMPP is a software for server like appache. It is not an FTP client.

Ok then i need step by step instruction on how to do this.

Step one is, to install a good ftp client on your pc, like FileZilla. You can download filezilla here: http://filezilla-project.org/

Then, after installation, launch filezilla.

On the left top, from left to right, you will find input fields where you type in: Server, Username, Pass, Port.

The server is usually the domain name, without the www, like: domainname.com

Username is the ftp account user name that you must have, or ask from the site owner or site host if you dont have it, also the pass.

The port you can leave as is.

Click on quick connect.

The remote site will now open on the right hand side window block, and your pc files are displayed in the left hand side block.

Dubble click folders on the remote server to open them.

You want to open the public_html folder, so dubble click it.

Select everything inside the publick_html folder, and drag it to the left block (your pc) to download it.

Once downloaded, you can disconnect, and enter the new domain ftp details in filezilla to open the new domain where you want to transfer the site to.

Now once the new domain is connected, you open its public_html folder, and from the left block (your pc) you select all the files you downloaded, and drag them to the right block inside the public_html folder of the new remote server.

If there is no database, you are done.

If there is a database, you need to log into it, back it up to your pc, and import it to the new server.

Thanks for the instructions. My only question is how do i get all the html, javascript, and css files for offline use? (And for editing)

I was also wanting to make sure since this is a joomla made site that the login and stuff will still work.

Ok I've installed Firezilla (on windows XP) All it comes up with is: Server Address, Port, and Administration Password. It doesn't come up with username or quick connect. Help!

I have been a bit busy yesterday, so appologies for replying only now!

In Server address, you wil type: domainname.com (without the http or www and replace domainname with actual domain name)

In user name (or account name), you will type the ftp username as given by site owner or hosting co.

In password, you wil put in the ftp password as given to you by site owner or hosting co.

In port, you put nothing, leave as is.

Then, you puch "connect" if you do not see the "connect" button, look in the top menu for it where "file" "edit" etc is.

Once you opened the site remotely in filezilla, as explained previously, you download it to your pc, and follow previous instructions.

I am not sure, what it is that you want to edit on the site, if it is a joomla site, most stuff you can edit online and in real time? If it is css/layout that you want to edit, you can do it on your pc (off line) in notepad or if you use some text editor or special program like dreamweaver. If you only want to edit the site, and not transfer it, you do not have to download everything, you just download those files you want to edit then!

I know u do all that but on mine it doesn't have an input for username!

I know u do all that but on mine it doesn't have an input for username!

See the screenshot attached. If your filezilla does not look like that, there is some mistake. Uninstall then, and try to download correctly and re-install correctly.

Oh wow. I downloaded the wrong one. Thanks. I'll try to log in and stuff and get back to you.
