Greetings everyone, I've been away from this forum for a long time, must be more than 10 years since my last post. That's how long I've been pretty much trouble free, as far as the Internet and data safety was concerned. Back then I was experimenting all too often with the free anti-spyware and anti-virus programs (Avast, AVG, etc.), getting in trouble in the process, as those freebies would often interfere with each other cause all sorts of headaches, mainly because those conflicts produced a breeding ground for some real nasty Internet threat. I can still remember the friendly atmosphere …

I would like to inform the people here on this site (Daniwebs) community know that my account here with Daniweb was not only accessed and found to have been accessed on the Darkweb, it was hacked. I have yet figured out exactly what they were using my account for, or to do while on my account yet and from where, what IP address or hopefully who. When I do figure this out, I will update as I make progress. A note to those that are quickly thinking "I must have used an unsecure password like password, 1234, admin, etc." well …

I've been writing about various security risks in the health sector for many years now. Usually my articles cover patient privacy, data protection and health provider network insecurity issues. Occasionally, they spill over into darker territory where the cyber risk morphs into a very real one as far as the health of the patient is concerned. Take my story at SC Magazine a couple of years ago which reported how researchers at Rapid7 had uncovered vulnerabilities in an insulin pump that had the potential to change the dosage supplied. Sure, the actual risk of exploit was low given that an …

I would like to ask for help on this problem that I've tried to troubleshoot, but have had no success at. The print spooler on a windows XP Home Edition SP3 machine is refusing to start. Previous to this problem, 5 or 6 printers had been configured and working for many months. 1. Printers and Faxes window is EMPTY, except for "Add Printer" 2. Click "Add Printer", returned error message: "Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running." 3. Execute: net start spooler, returned error message: "The service name is invalid". 4. Execute: services.msc, Print Spooler …

A new poll into Operating System popularity by a British computer magazine has revealed that an incredible 37 percent of respondents are still using Windows XP. That's more than Windows 7 which managed to woo 30 percent of the folk taking part, and Vista could only garner a pretty poor 16 percent of support. This being a PC magazine it should come as no great surprise to see Linux being used by 8 percent of respondents and Mac OS by 7 percent. However, what was surprising was the sheer number of people who refuse to let Windows XP die. Was …

I'm an XP lover and while I have moved on to Windows 7, my Windows 7 machines are configured to look like the XP Classic interface as much as possible. I'm pretty happy with these machines for now... I know that there is another popular DaniWeb article concerning why XP won't die but I wanted to provide some related information about the risks in running XP at this time that some of you may have not considered. After April 8, 2014, those of you that continue to run Windows XP will no longer have any type of advantage over attackers …

Windows is, according to just about any security expert you ask, the operating system most vulnerable to attack. Unless the security expert happens to be from Microsoft, that is. So it was quite refreshing to see Microsoft admitting to a spike in attacks on Windows this week. According to a posting by Holly Stewart on the Microsoft Malware Protection Center Threat Research & Response Blog Windows XP and Windows 2003 are officially under attack. Russia has seen ten times as many attack attempts than the global average, and the UK has witnessed a "surge" in the words of Microsoft. Referring …

I used to be an IE8 user and refused to use IE9 or above due to how when there was a conflict with certain cases, it would allow that case. Chrome sucks and I'm never using it again... I hear it actually has security now, but I'm not chancing it killing my compy again. FF is ok, it has security to protect you from the surface layers, but once you browse past that, you're fully open. I currently use Opera 12 which has been working well so far, though there's a few cases where IE8 has done better... I'd use …

According to research commissioned by security vendor [Bit9 + Carbon Black](https://www.bit9.com/solutions/carbon-black/), nearly half (49%) of the organisations questioned admitted they simply didn't know if their businesses had been compromised or not. This uncertainty regarding cyber-attack detection ability comes in stark contrast to the 32% who confirmed they had been attacked during the previous 12 months and the 64% expecting to be targeted in the next 12 months. Looking a little closer at the data, when it comes to who might be attacking them, hacktivists on 86% bizarrely came top of the list ahead of cyber-criminals with 77% and disgruntled employees …

So, Microsoft and iSIGHT uncovered another 0-day vulnerability; this time impacting all supported versions of Microsoft Windows and Windows Server 2008 and 2012. iSIGHT [has detailed](http://www.isightpartners.com/2014/10/cve-2014-4114/) in the wild exploits of the vulnerability, and points the finger of suspicion at state-sponsored Russian interests. The Dallas-based cybersecurity outfit explained that the exploit (dubbed Sandworm) showed visibility targeting Ukranian government organisations, Polish energy businesses and US academic organisations as well as NATO itself, and warned that there is an obvious potential for much broader targeting from the same and new threat actors. The researchers have been tracking at least five distinct Russia-based …

Microsoft will stop releasing security updates, hotfixes and other updates for Windows XP SP2 on July 13th 2010. No biggie, you might think, after all Windows XP SP3 was released way back in April 2008 and since then we've had both Vista (perhaps best forgotten) and the much more palatable Windows 7. Yet despite the death of XP SP2 being absolutely no surprise to IT admins the world over, it would seem that a large number of machines within enterprise networks are still running that very version of the Windows OS. Qualsys reckons we are still more than a year …

More often than not I'll be writing about the security problems facing Windows XP users, such as when I recently reported how a large number of enterprises are still running XP SP2 machines which will shortly stop being supported by Microsoft in terms of security updates, hotfixes and the like. So imagine my surprise, at the same time that Microsoft reminds us that it's the end of the line for Windows XP netbooks, to finally get hold of a story about Windows XP being good for security. OK, so the report from the Webroot Threat Blog is a pretty damn …

I have a Dell Optiplex PC with a legal copy of Windows XP. But the Dell hardware seems to be failing. The problem is that the XP distribution CD I got with the computer is a Dell distribution disk, possibly with files specific to Dell (It says both Dell and Microsoft). If I can't fix the hardware, I need to find a way to transfer my hard drive or the OS and software to another computer. How much different is a Dell Optiplex from a newer HP computer I have (with Linux installed)? I used a standard Microsoft XP installation …

I tried restoring my computer, running an anti virus program, restarting my computer, etc. Please help. If you need any more information please let me know. Thanks.

Well call me crazy, but I'm trying to install Windows 98 on an old XP desktop. The problem comes when I try to boot to the Cd-ROM, after hitting F8 and entering the boot menu and choosing "Cd-ROM" it opens a second menu that promps me to choose the boot divice, the only problem is it won't let me. the header of the second menu just states "Windows 98", and I can't use the up/down arrows, num-pad nor page up/down. after 10 seconds the said menu times-out and the machine defaults to the HDD (loaded with Win XP). I'm kinda …

Hi, I have an Asus laptop, it's about 7 or 8 years old. The only thing wrong is that it is very very slow so I want to do a reinstall. I thought a clean install the best way to go, I did a repair a couple of years ago with the 2 restore disks that came with the laptop but I feel a clean install is warranted now. My question is, can I use the 2 Asus Recovery disks to do do this, and if anyone knows how would appreciate help. I do have a Windows XP Home SP3 disk, …

Hi. I have a very old computer at my job. It will not boot up except for safe mode with networking. Suprisingly I like it better in this mode because it is 100 times faster. I do not know if it is plagued with viruses or has had a crash. Unfortunately, I can not print in safe mode. So I either need to be able to print in safe mode or get it back to booting up normaally. PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi. I have a c# project created in Visual Studio 2010. The project runs successfully on Windows XP 32bit but I get an error when building on Windows 7 64bit. The error is as follows: Could not load referenced assembly "C:\WINDOWS\system32\stdole.dll". Caught a FileNotFoundException saying "Could not load file or assembly 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\stdole.dll' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.". When I change the path of the assembly from C:\WINDOWS\system32\stdole.dll to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Visual Studio Tools for Office\PIA\Common\stdole.dll, the project builds successfully. Can someone please shed some light on this? Thanks

this is just a nifty feature I can't seem to find on google... (I've found 1 src "Windows7ProgressBar", but I can't get it working with the bad instructions provided) ^ I'm guessing they expect you to know C# when they say "drag the control over the form" - the "control" is a dll file, I think... and I have no idea what the "form" is (it's not the included exe) everyone's been working on transforming XP into the looks of 7, and they've done a remarkable job... but I don't want the full look of 7, I only want a …
