Hi there,
I do SEO for my website, and I found the indexed pages declined too much from around 4,000 to no more than 2,000. I had searched for many reasons online, but many of them are superficial. Could you tell me the steps to find out the reason and solve them?
Best regards,
Thanks

It's a big deal for me, you can see there are many catalogs with lots of products in each one on the site, but the indexed pages are too little in the Google search engine.

Some of the possible reasons could be:

  1. Reason: Inaccessible pages hurt rankings. Many affected pages harm the whole site's rankings, eventually removing them from the index.
Solution: Improve indexing by resolving site speed issues through image compression, code minimization, caching, and reducing server response time.

  2. Reason: Duplicate content reduces indexation. Search engines may skip indexing similar pages altogether.
Solution: Resolve duplicate content by removing, using canonical tags, redirecting, and preventing scraping.

  3. Reason: When a URL changes but the content doesn't, search engines can either index the old page, the new page, both, or neither.
Solution: Improve indexing for new URLs by optimizing sitemaps, internal linking, search engine submission, "Fetch as Google" usage, and social media promotion.

  4. Reason: Removing a webpage or creating a redirect decreases the site's usable URLs and leads to reduced indexation.
Solution: When deleting or redirecting pages, set up a 301 redirect to a new page, update your sitemap, submit it to Google Search Console for re-crawling, and adjust any internal links that pointed to the old pages.

  5. Reason: Robots.txt controls bot crawling. Blocking files and directories decreases indexation.
Solution: Enhance indexing by resolving Robots.txt and Meta Robots issues, allowing search engine access, adjusting the Meta Robots tag, and validating changes for improved visibility in search results.

Technical Issues: Google's indexing system relies on crawling and analyzing web pages to add them to its search index. If there are technical issues on your website, such as server problems, incorrect robots.txt configurations, or crawlability issues, it may prevent Google from properly indexing your site's content.

Quality and Relevance: Google prioritizes high-quality and relevant content in its search results. If your website's content doesn't meet these criteria, it might experience a decline in indexing. Low-quality or duplicate content, keyword stuffing, or outdated information can negatively impact your site's indexing and visibility.

Penalties or Manual Actions: If your website violates Google's guidelines, it may receive penalties or manual actions, leading to decreased indexing or even removal from search results. Common reasons for penalties include engaging in spammy practices, using black-hat SEO techniques, or having a significant number of low-quality or unnatural backlinks.

Algorithm Updates: Google frequently updates its search algorithms to improve search quality and user experience. Algorithm updates can result in changes to search rankings and indexing patterns. If your website's content or structure doesn't align with the updated algorithms, it may experience a decline in indexing.

Competition and Content Saturation: Increased competition in your industry or a saturated market can make it more challenging for your website to get indexed and ranked. If there is an abundance of similar content or if other websites have stronger authority and relevance signals, it can impact your site's indexing frequency and visibility.

To address a decline in Google indexing, it's crucial to ensure that your website follows best practices for technical optimization, provides high-quality and relevant content, and complies with Google's guidelines. Regularly monitoring your website's performance, keeping up with industry updates, and making necessary improvements can help improve your indexing and visibility in search results. Additionally, consulting with SEO professionals or webmasters can provide specific insights and recommendations tailored to your website's situation.

Google indexing could have experienced a sharp decrease due to several factors. First and foremost, its algorithms are continuously adapting, with user experience taking precedence over irrelevant content; search engines might not effectively index outdated, low-quality, or non-user-friendly pages. Technical issues like crawl errors, slow loading speeds, or unoptimized mobile responsiveness may impede indexing, as can spammy or low-quality sites being demoted through updates by Google - to address this problem, make sure your website follows SEO best practices, offers valuable content while maintaining good technical health by keeping good SEO best practices while adhering to SEO best practices as well as Google updates reducing visibility if required by both.

Please ensure there are no technical problems; I've had to deal with this problem occasionally to find a solution. Common issues include crawl errors, sitemap errors, and robots.txt issues. Alternatively, take into consideration the algorithmic changes made by Google.

The decline in Google's index means fewer web pages and content being indexed by Google, for some reasons:

Technical Issues: Technical issues on your site (such as server issues, robots.txt file issues, and site downtime) can hinder Google's ability to crawl and bookmark your pages.

Changes to the website structure: Changes to the website structure (including new designs, changes to the URL structure, or migration to a new platform) can cause indexation issues if not properly implemented. direct editing and sitemaps.

Content quality or relevance: Google's algorithm prioritizes relevant content. If the content is getting worse or less useful, this will affect the number of page indexes.

Google indexing may be decreasing due to outdated or low-quality content, technical issues, or demotion of spammy sites. To avoid your website from this, maintain good technical health and adhere to SEO best practices while offering valuable content.

I think you have to Check Google Search Console for manual actions. If you know the developer's work check and Review recent algorithm updates and adjust content accordingly. but if you are not then please contact with a developerhe will likely to solve your problem
