Hi!!
I recently discovered that someone been hacking my wireless network. I do have WPA encryption and I think I now have locked him out.
My question is; can he /she have gotten so far that they opened up my computer and searched my files? Or is the main purpose of hacking a network to get free access to internet? If he can get to my computer and my files, how far can he get and how does he do it? I mean, doesn't I have to grant him access to my computer for sharing my files? Shouldn't I get some kind of notice that he's trying to be a part om my "homenetwork"?
I remember setting up the network that I needed to manually configure what computers that had access to "filesharing".... or do I remeber wrong?

Ohh, by the way, I have W7 and two laptops and a desktop. And yes, I'm a newbie.

Thank's for any answers.

Hi

From what you are describing, it seems that the person only stole your bandwidth to get free internet. You need to secure your wireless router, if not done already. It is amazing how many unsecure access points are available to connect to. Just by driving down the street and scanning for wireless access points, one might find many.

To be able to gain access to your computer, the hacker needs your computer ip number first of all. One might be able to get that information, if he got access to your router admin area. (Your firewall should prevent any outside access without permission to your pc) The only time one can get access to your router admin area, would be if your router ip (internet ip) is known to the person or by scanning for open ports, your's was used, and your router has it's default logins still on it, or the router login was easy to crack.

But just for the argument, let's say he has cracked my pwd to my router and has access to my network. Can he then gain access to my computer without me knowing or will there be a request and I need to grant him the access?

The short answer is yes, it is possible, if you had an open port on your router.

I Think You Should Go To The Back Of Your Router And Check For A Small Hole And Pock A Pen And Wait For The WLAN Light To Off And On.. That Is When The Username And Password And All The Settings Will Be Changed To Default.. Then Go To The Website And Make A Username And Password.. I Would Tell You The Website For Wireless- B/G/N

Okay This Link Is To The WIreless-B/G : http://192.168.1.1/

NOTE : The Username And Password Both Is : admin

Okay This Link Is To The Wireless-N : http://192.168.0.1/ (This Should Be The Web Link )

NOTE : Username : <Do Not Fill In Anything>
Password : admin

NOTE THAT WHEN YOU GO TO THE WIRELESS-N LINK , YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR CABLE PLUGGED IN TO YOUR COMPUTER <Could Be http://192.168.1.1/

The OP does not have problems to access his router in this thread, and did not indicate the brand name of the router, yet you want him to revert to routers default settings? How will that solve his original problem as to if someone can access his computer via his router?

Dude...think of one more possibility :-)...
if some one has a physical access?? or password exposed??

go 2 http://192.168.1.1/

(1) Limit the number of wireless hosts at a time to 1 or 2
(2) Secure your ports.
