ok,,,i have literally just installed ubuntu onto my laptop after having only used windows OS. I am finding quite difficult to use just now and possibly jumping well ahead of myself. I would like to be able to spice up the look and feel of this new OS and would like to start by creating an animated logon screen...is this possible?

I guess I would like to clarify by saying, yes, of course it's possible. But no, I don't know how to do it through some easy configuration that I feel like explaining. (And I don't know why anybody would want to do it.)

Your best bet probably would be to learn how to interact with X11 by learning some xlib functions. Xdm would provide a good and simple base.
