I have installed Magento using xamp on my computer and everything works fine. When Magento is installed where my website is hosted it works fine apart from in the backend when I click on payment meothds I receive a http 500 error. I have looked everywhere for a solution but no luck.

You need to edit your .htaccess or folder. The reason why you got that error because you don't have permission.

cheers for the info. There is no htaccess file or folder within installation folder
solved this by disabling php extentions in cpanel
jcomputing: can you tell us which extensions you disabled? It could be helpful to other users.
