Virus/Spyware on computer, Hijack This log file

  #1
Oct 18th, 2004
I'm working on a WIndows 2000 Pro machine, that got hit with a virus/spyware this morning. I've run Spybot and AdAware, and there are still issues. I also checked active processes, and ended some. I also went into the registry and removed entries that were clearly spyware/viruses. I can't open Internet Explorer. The only way I can get on the internet is to open up My Computer, then type an address in the address bar. Also, my antivirus software won't load up automatically. I installed Hijack This, and here's the log file it generated:

Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked':

Reboot & without shutting down any processes, rescan with hijackthis & post that log.

Thank you for your help. Also, I'm thinking of making it policy to use Mozilla for web browsing throughout the building now, to help keep this from happening again, would that be a good idea?

I have Firefox (Mozilla) on my computer & would recommend it, although I use Opera 99% of the time. You will still need to use IE to get your Microsoft updates.

Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked':

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

I did exactly as you said, and made sure there were no explorer windows of any sort open, and did another scan. I fixed the entries that you said, and when i opened it back up again and did another scan, they were all right back there. Should I post another log so you can see?

Not necessary . Those entries are just not pointing at anything. Not malware of any kind. Just that they usually clean up straight away.
You can try doing it in safe mode, but they are not that important .
