Its on a IBM T43 laptop. and if I leave it alone for awhile, it starts fine but if I shut it down, it won't start again. Then if I leave it for awhile it starts up again! But if I leave it in stand by mode, it will start fine when I go back to it. I have switched out the hard drive, taken out the optical drive and the battery one at a time, but with the same result, it won't start until its ready.

Try Booting with only the Ac Power remove the battery
