I don't know why I keep getting this but can somebody take a look at my HJT log?

Many thanks...

Yuck. Bit of a mess you've got there, zeroth...

1. In addition to About:Buster, download and run HSRemove and CWShredder.

2. Is the following IP address the valid IP of one of your DNS namesrevers? Please verify this:

69.50.184.84

3. Run at least two of the following free online anti-virus/anti-spyware scans, let them clean what they find, and post the contents of the report each generates:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

4. Download and run Ad Aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy (download links are in my sig below).

Follow these directions for configuring Ad Aware (directions courtesy of our member "crunchie"):

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found

* Run SpyBot.

When you first run SpyBot, it will walk you through a Wizard which will perform a few critical functions (making a registry backup, getting the latest updates, etc.).

1. Perform all of the Wizard's tasks.
2. Run the program. Once it completes, have it fix everything it finds.
3. Reboot.

C) Boot into Safe Mode (do this by hitting the F8 key as the computer is booting) and:

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete everything inside the following folders (don't delete the folders themselves though):

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

(If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed.)

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.

5. Run HijackThis again and post a fresh log.

Thanks DMR,

It took a while but I did everything you posted. It didn't work, though. Just in bringing up this web page, I got the about:blank stuff. Just to download the spy stuff that I didn't have, like aboutbuster and cwshredder was a real chore. I have to go into HJT at least twice to get rid of the R1 about:blank stuff just so I could get on the internet. But I went back and redid the stuff you said until I did it all clean, in the order you said.

This is getting harder to do than to just format and redo the computer. I'm going to post the latest log but depending on your input may do just that. Thanks for the help.

zeroth

Sorry, I forgot the log - also having a terrible time with repeating characters. Can a keyboard be affected by this stuff?

Before fixing anything with hijackthis, please put in a permanent folder (it's now in a Temp folder) so it doesn't get deleted accidently, and so the backups it creates will be safe as well. A safe folder would be something like c:\HJT\hijackthis.exe (HJT can be whatever name you choose) :)

After you move it, close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

OK thanks and here it is:

1. The 69.50.184.84 IP address that's listed as one of your DNS servers is registered to psychs.net. If you don't recognize the IP or the URL we should remove it, but I won't have you do that until you can tell us if it's a valid entry.

2. C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

The log entry above indicates that you had at least 1 instance of Internet Explorer running when you ran HijackThis.
Before fixing problems with HijackThis, you must make sure to close/quit ALL instances of your web browser! HijackThis cannot fully perform its fixes while browsers are running.

3. Once you've quit all instances of Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe), have HJT fix:

Thanks, guy for trying to help. I'm so sick of dealing with this computer that I decided to clean it up for good. I just moved all important files to another computer and reinstalled the whole disk. It's clean now. The ultimate Spyware buster...

I did think I got it clean a couple of weeks ago, but the problem keeps creeping into the one computer. Plus it had this annoying habit of repeating keystrokes - have tried to fix that with no success. I've now replaced its functionality with a desktop and, since it's small and sits by the printer, I'm retiring it for the network printer port. With little application software loaded, let's see if it can get in trouble now. In any case, if it does, I can quickly clean it up now as there is nothing on it that I need.

Thanks again for the look,

zeroth

Hi there,
Im not to sure whats going on with my PC, but I seem to have some form of spyware/adware. Im running Trend Micro Internet Sec 2004, I have done scans with Spybot, Adaware and Microsoft Antispyware, and basically they all pick up different things and I quarantine them, but each time I log on I have IE pop up with Hotoffers in the web address. Adaware has picked this specific spyware up a fe times, and once again I delete it, but it seems to be coming back somehow.
Please let me know what I can do to rid my PC of these lil critters.
I have been watching this forum with interest and I have posted my log file of hijack this below.

The ultimate Spyware buster...

Not permanently though, unless you've installed Linux on the machine instead of Windows...

If you continue to use the machine online, you will get infected again, and it's much more likely that that will happen unless you take a few precautions. Here are some general suggestions:

1. Use Windows Automatic Update function to keep your system as up-to-date as possible with the most current Microsoft security and bug fixes.

2. Stop using Internet Explorer as your web browser. Because IE is so closely tied into the Windows operating system itself and contains so many security flaws, switching to another browser such as Netscape, Firefox, or Opera will greatly reduce the avenues through which spyware/adware/hijackers/etc. can infect your computer.

3. Install preventative utilities such as SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard (links are in my sig below), especially if you absolutely have to continue using Internet Exploder. These utilities protect areas of your system known to be vulnerable to malicious attacks.

4. Tighten up some of Internet Explorer's existing, default settings to make it more secure. Some info on that can be found here: http://tomcoyote.org/ieoe.php

5. Obviously-install a good anti-virus program and enable its "auto-protect" and email-scanning features.

6. Install a firewall program such as Zone Alarm (from Zone Labs), or the "Internet Security" packages offered by Symantec and McAfee.

7. None of your utilities are of much good if you don't check for updates frequently; updates for anti-spyware/anti-virus programs can be released as often as ever two or three days.

Hi there,
Im not to sure whats going on with my PC, but I seem to have some form of spyware/adware....

Hi jamesdawson,

First of all- welcome to TechTalk!

You definitely have a few "nasties" in your system. However, we do ask that members not tag their questions on to a thread previously started by another member (regardless of how similar your problem might seem). Not only does it divert the focus of the thread away from the original poster's problem, but it also makes it less likely that you yourself will get the individual attention that you need.

Please start your own thread and post your question there. When you do, please try to give us as much specific info as possible regarding the problem (exact error messages, system specs, etc.).

For a full description of our posting guidelines and general rules of conduct, please see this page:
