Hello,
What anti-virus are you running? Restores don't usually work. First you'll have to remove any viruses that might be causing the symptoms but the anti-virus is also a program that may not work either as a result of the infection. You may have to run a deep full anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-rootkit scan from safe mode.
After that, and if your programs still don't run, your best bet is probably to run the Vista installation CD and go for the "repair" option, this usually leaves your installed programs alone while repairing the operating system while presumably restoring funcitonality to your installed programs.
Let me know please.

I am running Windows Vista home edition. Recently I think a virus or something has ruined my computer. I can no longer download any program from the web and many of the programs that reside on my hard drive will not function. I am led to believe their is a registry problem. Microsofts suggestions of doing restores just made the entire situation worse. Any help appreciated.

I was running AVG, it is no longer working, that is one of the issues. I don't have the CD for Vista because it came pre-loaded and it has never allowed me to create repair disks. Even after the new hard drive was installed last fall. Again they pre-installed Vista and said they didn't have a disk to give me. :(

I am also using, spybot and super anti spyware, these I usually run twice a week, AVG was set to auto every day and continuously. Sorry I am having difficulty typing because the cursor is jumping around the text!

what should I run for this?

what should I run for this?

I am not sure if the poster read the first 60 posts in the thread . . . .

Could you please place Junction.exe on your Desktop
Then, download RunThis.bat to your Desktop and DoubleClick it (or RightClick & Run as Admin) to run it.
A command box will pop up - no worries. After a few moments a log should pop up - please post that for us.

PP :)

Well . . . Shoot.

After all that hassle, that log looks OK. . . . At least we can rule some more things out...

-- What happens when you try to run programs and they fail? Any error message(s)?

-- What kind of "Restore" did you do and how did it make things worse? (your first post)

PP :)

first restore did nothing to help or hinder, so the person helping me had me do a restore in safe mode to "last known good configuration" this apparently brought back things that spybot had removed, I think anyway, then they kinda gave up on me and I quit getting responses. Honestly I have done so many things now I can't remember specifically what got worse when but it seemed significant after the system restore from safe mode. Corel painter x started shutting down after freezing up, elements disappear from the tools area, just random stuff really. Then says program will shut down now. Last week it stopped opening and I had to reinstall. Did it again this weekend and I reinstalled again. Acrobat would not let me update for the last month. Then it started not wanting to open from a download and would only open a page if I opened the program first then clkd the download. Also cant unninstall or reinstall this program. Now it wont' download any file at all. Acrobat was the first to go it will however still open a file I already have. Acrobat professional would still work but it stopped working at all last week also, it will not open. Elluminate Live is an online meeting program that we use for classes. It will not let me log into it or download recorded sessions. I am downloading on another computer, burning a disk and then installing on this one for the fixes. Lets see, what else. Oh, AVG tried to update about a week ago and now won't open, wont' run, won't delete, won't turn off, or turn on (security says it's off, but scanning with combofix said it was running. There is also the strange jumping of the cursor while typing, this started happening recently also. Sometimes it is worse, sometimes not at all. It has a mind of it's own apparently. Can't think of anything else right now, it may be affecting other programs too, those are just the ones I use on a daily basis. Thanks so much for trying to help! :)

Thanks so much for trying to help! :)

Happy to try.

I am going to be away from compy for a bit - I'm sure crunchie will weigh in again.
I'd like to go back over this thread more closely to see if we are missing anything - this might not be a malware issue, though some was removed during the scans.

-- Are you able to boot to Safe Mode with Networking on the ill compy? (tap F8 at boot - don't use msconfig for safe mode)

-- Do you have a "recovery partition" on ill compy?

I'll be gone for a bit - definitely be back Tuesday (EST)

PP :)

Don't know about a recovery partition, should be able to network in safe mode, thanks for the help, I appreciate it very much. I will continue trying to resolve the issue as long as someone is willing to help me try :)

OK - See if you are able to run programs in Safe Mode.
Also, see if you can download in Safe Mode.

Need to rule some more stuff out.

-- What Brand compy is this?

Be back on Tues :)

Also, are you able to right click on a file and download it that way?
Can you borrow an OS CD to attempt a repair?

Sony, Vaio, 3 years old running Vista home premium

I'll see what I can do in safe mode

rt click won't work either, tried that and no one I know has a Vista disk, tried that too. I may be able to call and order one from sony, I'll have to check.

ok, I went to safe mode, via F8:

Adobe Reader: opened

Xara: opened

AVG: won't open error_ @AVGErrorCode_0x0253%file%=AVG\AVG8
@AVGErrorCode_0x0020
Dreamweaver: opened

Acrobat Professional: won't open _ error while loading_the plugin "Accesability.api" failed to initiate

Photoshop: opened/then closed saying _please log in using account with Admin priv.

Super-anti spyware: opened

Spybot: opened

painter x: opened

Microsoft office: all opened/then closed saying needed to put in activation info

won't go online in safe mode but appeared that it would work in "networking" mode:don't know for sure, just have to try it and see. I have done this in the past with the previous hard drive.

hope this helps, I can go to Sony and see if I can find out about a Vista disk

Solve a problem with PSIKey

PSIKey has stopped working properly.

An update is available that solves this problem.

Click to download the update from the Protexis Inc. website
Download instructions

In the File Download dialog box, click Run or Open. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Follow the steps in the installation wizard.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

just got this in windows solutions box

I can order the repair disks for less than $30.00. It looks as though it will do a wipe rather than a repair but I am not sure, I say that because it includes replacement files specifically for this pc, which would be the Vaio system files.

I cannot offer anything more myself other than try the repair once the disc arrives.
Am getting too old to learn new tricks :).

Well, thanks for all your help, I'm sure I'm much older than you, I'm a grandma! And you know an incredible amount, I am amazed and stupified! Thankyou very much for all of your time.

Am getting too old to learn new tricks :).

Ain't it the truth?? ;)

I, for one, do not give up so easily . . . . .

Hey KH - Do you have the VAIO Recovery Wizard option available to you on your compy?

Click START > Help & Support > Recovery Wizard.

If so, what options do you have (I have no specific VAIO knowledge...)

-- The assistance you mentioned before, was that in a forum, or private. I'd like to see it, if possible.

I will be back Tuesday Evening EST.

Cheers :)
PP

Well, thanks for all your help, I'm sure I'm much older than you, I'm a grandma!

Can be a grandma by 36 :).

don't see a VAIO recovery, only Windows backup and restore, Vaio has only system info, power mngmnt, keyboard and mouse, network config, display settings, special buttons: previous support I will have to find what I did, I've been trying to fix this for a while and honestly can't remember what I did forum wise or email wise and some was on the phone with the tech who installed the newest hard drive. He is the one who suggested the 2nd system restore, I think, sorry, it's a lot of info. Let me look back and see if it's not too confusing to sort out. Thanks for hanging in there. So, should I go ahead and order the "OS disks" from Sony? couldn't hurt to have them just in case.

So what is the attorney's comment about, did I say something wrong? Not blaming Microsoft, I just wasn't able to get the issue resolved...?

Don't worry about the 'lawyer.' Is no longer a member :).

So, should I go ahead and order the "OS disks" from Sony? couldn't hurt to have them just in case.

Definitely get your OS disks (I'm assuming Windows disc and sony drivers)! They are good to have on hand and, given all that has been tried thus far, they may be necessary.
I'd still like to scrutinize this thread a bit more when I have the time - awfully busy right now - to see if we missed something.

ok, thanks, for now though, what should I do while I can't access AVG? I am running spybot and superanti-spyware nightly, do I need to do anything else? Oh and windows defender is on.

Can you uninstall AVG?
(can't remember.... :))

no, can't do anything with it at all, not even in safe mode

don't know if it's significant but Windows downloads and updates with no problem, also had trouble getting on the Sony Secure website to order the repair disks last night, someone asked about that, finally got it to work but it was a challenge.

--How do you do your Windows updates? Do you use a browser or click the tray icon?

-- Let's see if we can remove AVG:
First, try AVG Remover (top of list on this page):
http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools

Then, have a go with REVO Uninstaller to clear any hangers-on.

Let us know how you fare :)

Ok, I uninstalled AVG, desktop went away but there are still several file folders and a weird one with $ in front of it. Not sure the best way to safely get rid of these. It says deleting may cause the computer to become unstable and it's unstable enough. ;) Windows updates are set to auto, so however that works, sometimes it updates when it turns on.

Is explorer.exe running?
Open task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and see if it is running. If it is, RightClick it and restart it - does Desktop come back?
