Hi, I had no choice but to register here and get some help as this thing is getting the best of me. Now, I'm a very careful user, rarely download/run any random software and try to get very good care of my laptop. 2 days ago, out of nowhere, it just froze up on me after about 20 min of starting. I hadn't shut it down in a few weeks (been using Hibernate instead) so the system was stable for a while and out of nowhere is freezes. I didn't download/run anything new that day, just my regular stuff (Firefox/Visual Studio/Notepad etc). I had no choice but the force a shut down since nothing was responding. But a little after restarting it froze again. I began to suspect its a HW problem - I decided to get a tool to check my temps - a quick search led me to "Speedfan". Now when I tried to download it - I kept getting redirected to some website which then redirected me to spam. I thought the link is broken so I got a torrent of Speedfan and the core temps were around 60-70C which was high - so while doing some research on this all, of a sudden I get redirected to the same spam website again! Its been happening on both IE and Firefox ever since.
I'm pretty sure this is all caused by some virus - but so far I have been unable to get rid of it.
I've used MB-AV full scan - nothing. My AV - TendMicro Office Scan - nothing. Microsoft's latest "Malware removal tool" - nothing. The computer is still freezing constantly (no crash, just screen freezes and nothing is responsive anymore). I ran HijackThis, nothing seems to be suspicious (see attached).

Sorry for being wordy.. any help?

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

What processor is in the lappie? If AMD, they are not meant to run that hot.

Log is clear.

Post your MBA-M log please.

Download DDS from the following location:

DDS Tool

Save dds.scr to the desktop

Disable any script-blocking programs and then double-click on the DDS.scr icon to start the program. If you did not disable a script-blocker that may be part of your antimalware program, you may receive a warning from your antimalware product asking if you would like DDS.scr to run. Please allow it to do so.

Once you double-click the icon a Windows security warning may also appear asking if you are sure you would like to run the program. Click on the Run button to start DDS. If no warning appeared, then you should just continue.

DDS will now display a small black window providing information as to what DDS is doing on your computer.

DDS will now start scanning your computer and compiling a variety of information about what programs are starting on your computer, what files have been recently created, and the general configuration of your computer. When DDS has finished scanning, all of this information will be compiled and be displayed in two Notepad windows named dds.txt and attach.txt.

You will then be shown a small box giving instructions as to what you should do with these files. Feel free to close this message box by pressing the OK button.

We now need to save the two log files that were created. First click on the DDS.txt window and click on the File menu and then select Save As... menu option.

Save DDS.txt to the desktop. Now click on the Attach.txt Notepad window and save that to the desktop also.

Copy the contents of the DDS.txt log and paste it into your reply here.
Attach the attach.txt log with your reply using Reply to Thread button, then the Manage Attachments button.

Your HJT log looks OK for the most part, though HJT alone is inadequate to diagnose today's malware.

Do you know what this is?
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\GNCF1E.EXE

Since your other scans have not turned up anything, please try the following and post the logs for us:

FIRST:

Please run a scan with the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0
* Note that you may need to temporarily disable your Anti-virus program for the duration of this scan.

-- Accept the agreement and allow the scanner to load and update its definitions. This may take a few minutes.
-- After the program files are downloaded and the anti-virus database is successfully updated, please select the Scan section in the left part of the main program window.
-- Click My Computer to begin a complete scan of your computer, including critical areas.
-- Once the scan has finished, select the Reports section in the left part of the main program window. Click the Save report button in the report viewing window. The Saving window will open.
-- Name the file KAS 1 and choose to save it to the Desktop as a .txt file and then click the Save button.
Please post that for me.

THEN:

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner:
http://www.gmer.net/download.php

-- DoubleClick the .exe file and, if asked, allow the gmer.sys driver to load.
* When GMER opens, it should automatically do a quick scan for rootkits.
When the quick scan finishes, click the Save Button and save the scanlog to your Desktop as GMER One.log.

-- If upon running GMER you receive a warning about Rootkit Activity and GMER asks if you want to run a scan, Click NO

-- Make sure the Rootkit/Malware Tab is selected (Top Left of GMER GUI)
Along the Right Side of the GMER GUI there will be a number of checked boxes. Please Uncheck the following:
- Sections
- Drives or Partitions other than your Systemdrive (usually C:\)
- Show All (be sure this one remains Unchecked)

-- Then, click the Scan Button
Allow the scan as long as it needs and then click the save button and name the log GMER Two.log and save it to where you can easily find it and post it for me along with the first log.

***Disconnect from the internet and do not run any other programs while GMER is scanning. Temporarily disable any real-time anti-spyware or anti-virus protection so they do not interfere with the running of GMER.
DO NOT take any action for any found items until I can have a look.

Will check back as time permits - this time of year is hectic for most forum volunteers (and everybody else).

Cheers :)

Well . . .Shoot.

Looks like crunchie and I are going in two different directions.

I am going to leave my post up since I think it is a valid way to proceed + that temp file is iffy.....

@crunchie - since you were here first, feel free to delete my post. No worries :)

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\GNCF1E.EXE

I need to wake up before I reply, I think. Missed that one.

Thank you Gents for the replies, really appreciate it. I was already planning the reformatting process..
The computer is Dell Inspiron 6400 w/ Intel Core Duo. its 4 years old, but has been running very smoothly still since I tried my best to take good care of it.
I also noticed that the freezing also occurs when I try to Shut Down/Hiberante/Sleep legitimately.
Edit: Also, the "\TEMP\GNCF1E.EXE: - i've noticed these a while ago, suspected of malware, but turned out is TrendMicro's "watchdog" or something of that sorts

All right - this is going to be chunky:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\QC299D.EXE

oh, sorry, forgot to mention - I disabled the MBAM back in the day since they kept collecting up over time. I scanned the only partition (C:\) and at the end I got the OK that everything was clean, 0 infections.

Also, the "\TEMP\GNCF1E.EXE: - i've noticed these a while ago, suspected of malware, but turned out is TrendMicro's "watchdog" or something of that sorts. Everytime the computer starts is a random 6-character exe.

So that's clean for sure. I just got GMEr, and am ready to sacn the rootkit as well.

But, is the MBA_M database up-to-date?

oh yes, I update each Av before scans/
GMER is scanning the hd right now, but its taking a while. Probably will finish in 40-50min still..
Other than that I suppose I have no choice but to format

Sorry for double post. GMER has been scanning over 2 hours now, it didn't look like anything was found, but obviously the computer just froze when I tried to move the mouse and check on the progress.. :( Whatever this is, HW or a virus, or both, I'm afraid it beat me. Unless there are other suggestions I will probably reformat everything and start clean

I would guess you have one of the popular MBR Rootkits that is making the rounds lately.
People seem to be having trouble with GMER lately - you pretty much need to leave the compy alone while it runs.

Let's try this:

If you already have Combofix on your machine, DELETE it.

Then follow the instructions in the link below to download a fresh copy of Combofix and run it:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please follow the instructions in the linky very carefully to run it and then post the combofix log for us.
Be sure to install Recovery Console (if you are able to do so) and disable any other security programs or Anti-Virus programs as per the linky before running Combofix!

Let's see what that tells us.

PP:)

well, it froze again while i began the process..

I really appreciate the time you guys took in trying to help me, but even if I were to find a virus I wouldn't feel my computer is completely clean until its completely cleaned.

Thanks again :)

grab some of the keywords on that website, if you can. Preferrably the ones before it redirects.

search for them in firefox.
you do this by typing in the address bar:
about:config
and reading the warning. and proceeding. and using the built in search.

worth a try before you reformat the thing, anyway.

Remmber to back it up befor you format it please
