This site has been a great help for getting rid of some minor problems but I don't know what to do about this. I have run ad-aware, spybot, norton anti virus and windows defender but i still have a hijacked homepage and my search function in internet explorer has changed to bring up the same webpage. The search function issue never goes away. I can change the homepage via the internet options menu but once the computer reboots, it defaults back to the bogus homepage. Also, for the last couple of days, the task manager button (when i press ctl+alt+del) has been grayed out. However, at the time of this post it seems to have been corrected.

Here is the HijackThis log:

Updating Java and Clearing Cache

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  2. It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  3. If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:

    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

[*]After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
[*]Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
[*]There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked

Downloaded Applets
Downloaded Applications
Other Files

[*]Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
[*]Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Ok.... I updated Java and cleared Cache as instructed. FYI...After the reboot, my homepage did not reset to the Evko.biz site. However, my search function on internet explorer is still being hijacked by Evko.biz

Below is a fresh Hijack This Log..

And click Fix Selected.. How is everything now?

Everything seems to be running smoothly. On the reboot, my homepage stayed where i put it and the Search function has been restored. Also, I have not lost access to the task manager again. So, unless you spot anything else in this log, you can mark this problem solved. I really appreciate your help on this.

However, I should mention that a few days ago when this all seemed to happen, a system folder was created. It erased all my favorites links and now whenever i create a favorites link, it is going to this folder, here is a screen print of it. Is this ok. It warns me not to delete or the computer will not work right. I think it may be a scam to track my websites but i would like your opinion

Please submit the following file to one of these online file scanners.

C:\WINNT\system32\kernels8.exe

Jotti File Scan
VirusTotal File Scan

This will produce a report after the scan is complete, please copy and paste those results in your next post.

Ok... I could not find that exact file but i picked the .exe file that was most similar. If you did intend that exact file, I will redo the scans but you have to help me find it. Is it a hidden file or something???

here are the reports

LOL, I was about to suggest the same thing. That program is awesome. Can clean everything mcafee can and then some. And it's free!

I did as you suggested but i still can not locate the file and when i copy and paste into the scanners you linked i get this error message

"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file"

Both of them don't recognize the file. :?:

Please let me know what to do next

Please open HiJackThis, and place a checkmark next to:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System] C:\WINNT\system32\kernels8.exe

Now click "Fix Selected".

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINNT\system32\kernels8.exe

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

ok... did as you asked and here is the new hjt log report.

Note: when i selected the file in killbox, i did get the PendingFileRenameOperations prompt.

Well it has been removed. Is everything running smoothly?

everything is running smoothly...and i can't thank you enough for your help.

My only concern is this vxsite system folder created the same day i picked up all these problems. (see post 9 for screen print). This folder is still there and i don't know why. The screen print shows 96 files and 13 folders. These are all my favorites internet links. however, i can not delete this folder b/c it warns me that it is needed to run windows properly. Windows, of course, ran properly for nearly 2 years without it so i am a little confused why it is needed now all of a sudden.

If you think it is ok to have it, i will just ignore it. Otherwise, i would like to be rid of it as well. I don't trust it.

Thank you again,

John
