I am unable to login, usernames are gone

And that is not all. When I turned on my computer yesterday, my usernames were not on the Welcome screen. So, I was able to find out that I should run a CHKDSK /p. So I did that, and it found one or more errors, but it didn't tell me what those errors are, and I tried to do a CHKDSK /f and that is not a valid variable. So, I was able to talk to my brother who works with Windows every day. He told me I could log in as Administrator, as long as the password was set up. So that is how I'm able to be on here now. When I go to the control panel, and click on User Accounts, the window is completely empty. But when I go and right click on My Computer and click on Manage, I am there, along with the other only user, my hubby, and we are not x'd out. In that same window, it shows the Device manager, and that is completely empty. In the Add/Remove programs, all of my programs are listed there, including the sound card that I installed about 3 weeks ago, but is not showing up here. I have run Antivirus software, and nothing is coming up. It did a really thorough scan when I booted up one of the times today, and still nothing was found. I tried running in Safe mode, and after I logged in as Admin, the screen was completely black, and stayed that way. I do not want to have to re-install windows, if I don't have to, and I would like that to be the very very last resort. I'm not sure if I will be able to back up what I need even if I do re-install. I was on the computer on Monday and it was fine. The only thing I did on Monday, was try to delete a CMedia PCI driver out of my add remove, and it didn't work. I did find it in the registry, and I just changed to give me full permission so that I could get rid of it in the add/remove. I am the administrator, and the Master Account holder. I hope that someone can give me some idea of what is wrong. I just got it back, too, and now this!

Hello Skhuggs and welcome to the Viruses, spyware and other nasties forum. It does look like you computer has a bit of trouble, but first things first.

Go here and download HiJack This. Extract the contents to a permanent folder such as C:\HJT or something similar.

Plz post your log again but this time when the notepad file opens up go to edit--control all. Then go to Edit--copy. After that reply to this and go to the edit menu in your internet browser and click edit--paste.

If you can still use keyboard shortcuts then it will also work if you click on the text in the notepad log and the press ctrl+a then press ctrl+c. Then reply and click in this area you type in and press ctrl+v.

sorry about that - I downloaded Trojan Hunter, and it found one trojan virus, and I cleaned that. I also ran a registry cleaner, and fixed those. I have tried to run system restore, but that is not able to run, as the RPC server is not available? Is this right? I can't put spaces in, I've gone thru the whole thing twice and once I hit preview or save, it goes right back to how it shows up on the previous posts. I don't know why, but I'm putting returns all the way thru and it's not saving them. Ok, I posted this with returns in it and it didn't work. Well to start things out download Ewido's Security Suite from here.

1. Install ewido anti-malware
2. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
   • Install background guard
   • Install scan via context menu
3. Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
   • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
   • Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
   (the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful" )

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Open up Ewido
• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
• Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
• Close ewido anti-malware.

Reboot.

After reboot post the ewido log along with a new HJT log

Ok, well, here is what has happened since I was last on. I was told by someone else, before I came here that I could repair Windows with my XP disc. Needless to say, that did not work. So, I had been trying to do that, and it kept getting stuck. So, I had another hard drive that I could install, and then use the other drive as a slave so that I could get the files off of it. Well, I am using the new drive, but have yet to be able to get the old files off of the other hard drive. I installed the drive, formatted it after having many issues. I am hoping that I will still be able to get those files off of the other drive and I am going to keep trying till I succeed! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the help here. You could transfer the files with a CD or Memory Stick.
If you dont have both hard drives hooked up already you could connect them at the same time and transfer the files in safe mode.

what if it doesn't recognize the hard drive? I had both of them installed, and it doesn't recognize the slave drive (the old one). I'm really afraid that everything is gone, and I don't want to believe that.

Well attach the old hard drive to the main cords and reboot in safe mode and it should work then copy the files you want onto CD's then turn off your computer put the new drive back in and then put the files on the new one.

Ok, I will try it that way, as I wasn't able to go in Safe mode, but I will give it a shot! I hope it works!
