IE Opens by itself (hijack log included)

Just recently from time to time, my IE opens and goes to an advertisement page. (Everytime its a different ad) I am using a laptop and I have another monitor attached to it. When the IE opens up my laptop screen turns into movie screen and shows movie clips of advertisements (from Roo or something)

I've tried using McAFee, Trend Micro, and Ad-Aware but none of them showed any kind of virus or adware.

The first O20 is the problem. Run HT again and delete it.
The second O20 i am suspicious of.... i can find no reference to it at all. Delete it also and see if a problem arises sometime. If there it does you can always restore it later.
Winlogon notify is a tool microsoft put into a security download set recently to check if you have a genuine copy of windows, and the O20 entry with WgaLogon.dll is part of that. Leave it there.
[pmkjkhf.dll is a randomly named file which has been placed in the AppInit_DLLs so that windows loads it automatically each time it starts...]

As for the

For a start, and just to clear things up...this log entry is valid - it's a microsoft logon validation process:-

If you are cool with peeking inside your registry, go there [Start > Run, type regedit and then key Enter, and check that key [ if it is blank you may see the entry by selecting the AppInit_DLLs key and going View> Display binary data.] Nothing? Try Edit > modify binary data [> Cancel].
If there is an entry there, then you have to get rid of it next, because virtually no programs use that key [ except Norton, which may be why norton can slow a puter]. Getting rid of it will not be easy, because i think it will be written straight back in by normal deletion...
Let me know what you find.
Meanwhile, do get in touch with Merijn, because they KNOW stuff. HT is theirs, after all.

I have tried looking the value under my AppInt_DLLs and there was the value; c:\windows\system32\pmkjkhf.dll. I've tried deleting it but just as you said, it was rewritten after I rebooted.

I did some searching online about AppInt_DLLs and found this website that gave a tutorial on to remove a value under AppInt_DLLs, simliar to my situation.

Time to get some free stuff....

First off I would like you to download CCleaner from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html and put it in a new folder.

Then download RootKitRevealer from http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RootkitRevealer.html [the link is at the bottom of the page] and place in a folder next to CCleaner. Read that webpage.

Thirdly go get Ewido 4.0 [free], install it alongside your other regular applications in Program Files, because you should keep it for scanning once a week or so - put an icon on your desktop. McAfee is letting you down. I'm not sure it's wise to have more than one AV product installed and running, but I'd like you to go to AVG site and download AVG Free, install it, update and run it to see what it finds. Then it's up to you whether you keep it....

Now, Ewido:- start it; the main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'. Click on update tab and then Update Now. When it finishes click on scanner tab and then Settings:- How to act- click on recommended action and set Quarantine. For reports, set to generate after every scan and untick only if threats found. Finally down on the tray right click the Ewido icon and untick Start with windows, an then Exit it. Don't scan yet

Ok, you're done with the net. Shut it down. Disconnect..... whatever...

Open a window and go to tools tab > folder options > view. Set to show hidden files and folders, and untick hide protected operating system files and folders, Apply and OK. We want our tools to see evrything, right?

Now rclick your recycle bin and run CCleaner. [or go to its folder and dclick ccleaner.exe] You will lose a lot of handy stuff like histories etc... but there is a job to do...
Close all open windows, shut all applications, and then open a Windows explorer and Run RootKit Revealer from its folder...[dclick the .exe file]. Do not touch anything, even mouse, until it completes its scan.

Now go into safe mode [Restart, F8 and select Safe Mode and Enter.... You'll get a dark desktop with icons etc...]

Start Ewido, do the full system scan. Click "Apply all actions" to place any infected files into Quarantine, and only then click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans; click on the scan you just performed and select "Save report."

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while Ewido is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper Ewido's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

And now, still in Safe Mode and with nothing else open, run Hijack This , check the eight items i listed above and Fix them. Or at the very least the bottom four!!

Qttask and Realsched....If you want to remove them and HijackThis does not complete the job, you may have to stop qttask.exe and realsched.exe in Task Manager as processes first, then delete realsched.exe in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB. and qttask from C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe.

Right. Restart into Windows as per normal and see what happens. Run Hijack This...., and set System Restore to ON for all drives. Make a restore point!!!!!!!!! Let me know if you're clean.
Finally, if all is ok, remove earlier restore points, cos they may be bugged!
Go back and hide those operating system files and folders if you wish. Prob safer to do so...

PS... that msg u got above about contacting Merijn after trying a fix with HT, ignore it.... sometimes it has trouble doing backups, but it still fixes things...

First off, many thanks again for all the help you have provided. I really appreciate the time and effort you gave to help me with my computer problems.

Heres what happened...

From the RootKit it detected 2 files, one data mismatch and one hidden from the Windows API. I do not quite understand what do do with those 2 files.

Then in safe mode I did a virus scan using Ewido and 2 files came up, pmkjkhf.dll and awtqrqo.dll. It said it successfully quarantined them both however, the pmkjkhf.dll still appeared on the HijackThis log.

I've managed to get rid of the Qttask, Realsched, Spywarebot and the non named Toolbar.

First, the RKR results. They're ok..

[http://www.hklm.com/?f] if u put it in a browser as a URL, which it rather suggests that you do from its reg entry..:).
Have a look by entering the key as an http://www. URL. [ If you used opera, rclick menu would give you that

opportunity..]. So remove it if you do not use that site.

C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\aec.sys :- Not a problem... you can check its properties if you like [it's prob zipped

inside the SP2.cab file in i386... should be a microsoft file..an audio driver add-on.]
- so that's clean.

Secondly, ewido.. So we have a name for that pest...Downloader.ConHook!! ..and Ewido fixed part of it..This next

should get rid of the remainder [msac850.dll] which is variously called virtumonde [vundo for short] or Winlogon

Notify trojan. The name of the .dll file varies, but not its game.
So....
- go here:- http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ ... and get Spybot S&D 1.4 [it's the top download on the

page, all you need], and it's free if you wish. Install it to a folder near other AV stuff. Somewhere... Update it.

XXXXX -in an explorer window, folder options, "Hide protected operating system files" box must be unticked as

before, and "show hidden files and folders" selected. [ i always leave this latter setting in place, NOT the former.].
- turn off System Restore.
- reboot into Safe Mode.
- run CCleaner again, in case the trojan has copied something to a temp folder.
-run Ewido again, as before.
- now this is important, do this stuff exactly as here:- CLOSE EVERYTHING. Open the HT folder in an explorer

window, dclick the HijackThis.exe file, CLOSE the explorer window, press Do a system scan only, checkmark

should be in the CLSID folder [this contains a looong list of similar codes... if it is, delete the particular code

[identifier], and it alone!!. Likely it will also be a data value shown on the right side; highlight the name and go Edit>

delete.
Now back to the top of the registry, highlight My Computer and search for msac850.dll. Delete all entries as you

search right to the end.
Close the registry. Very likely there will be many other entries made in the registry, but deleting these should stop

it.
- run Spybot S&D.
Reboot and run HT again. They should be gone.... If they are, reboot into normal mode and go back into explorer

and re-tick "Hide protected operating system files".

Is everything working okay? Then open Ewido, > infections> quarantine, select the baddies and Remove Finally.

About that registry, I couldn't find it in regedit. When I arrive to the folder HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\webcal there is only a folder shell, under that open, under that command. In the command folder there is a default key that contains this value

rundll32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AMERIC~1.0\WEBCAL~1.DLL,WebCalHandler %1

Is there a way to delete it from Rootkit?

- I think that you can safely ignore the WEBCAL report. It is tied to Dell computers somehow...[did they sell you

the pc with the OS pre-installed?], or to one of the services you have running, perhaps an autostart one, in the

background. The mismatch seems to just mean it did something while RKR ran, or an error. You can see that it is

linked to AmericaOnline; are you using an AOL service - a downloader for example -, or did you uninstall AOL

once by any chance? Anyway, the problem seems related to "ownership" of the file. So, while in safe mode go to

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\webcal. Rclick webcal, open Permissions..allow the Administrator full control,

export the key to somewhere easy to find.. eg My Notes, then delete it from the Registry, and import it straight

back into the Registry by dclicking the .reg file you just saved...; and delete that file from My notes.
You could of course just not re-import the key and see what breaks...:).
Btw, RKR is just that, a revealer - it is up to you to define what is bad, and then to fix it...

Now, the nemesis, the BHO and Winlogon Notify.. At this point some say.. Great! you're clean!. The tough bit

here is that your CLSID has not been reported yet, but the msac bit of the dll name is something that Vundo can

manufacture from its coded scraps. So let's try FixVundo from here:-

You know the drill - disconnect from net, turn off System Restore, run CCleaner, uncheck "hide protected opsys

files", reboot in safe mode.... then go to the folder where you put it and dclick the .exe. It's automatic from there.
Finished? Back to normal mode, run HT and i hope it reports at the very least that the dll is missing in one of the

entries. If it does, check the O2 and O20 entries to fix. And fix them. If the dll is missing but HT cannot remove the

entries it does not matter, they are now garbage, and if you were concerned any registry cleaner would remove

them..

If FixVundo fails, there is one more bullet to try...

I tried using the FixVundo but it couldn't find the vundo trojan on my computer. I hope I can fix this malware soon without reformating. The ad popups are becoming more and more annoying :(

The silver bullet: download vundofix from this site:-

This [an 85 kB file] is the latest version. Place it in a C: folder. Make these preparations [which may not strictly be necessary as before, but stopping vundo from copying/blocking is wise.]
-disconnect from the net.
-untick "hide protected operating system files"
-run CCleaner
-reboot to safe mode and run vundofix. If it recognises virus files then remove them.

Reboot to normal mode and run HijacktThis from there. If you are clear then turn off System Restore to delete old restore points, and then turn it right back on. Make a restore point.

If this fails to recognise your trojan because it is too recent a variant then there is an older version of the same
name, written by same group, which you can get from here [because it has the same name it will overwrite the
first pgm if saved to the same folder]:-

This second one requires you to enter the pathname of the dll. In your case it would be
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msac850.dll
and at the second prompt
C:\WINDOWS\system32\058casm.*
Note that i have not trialled this older version, simply because i do not have the virus files to enter.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been very buzy lately.

I think the second exe file worked. Now when I do a HijackThis scan, the msac850.dll shows up as file missing and the O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3A9D5790-8C7D-4A58-A5C6-9645FF5D78E1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msac850.dll still appears. However unlike before I am able to fix them and they will not appear on another scan right after fixing them. But when I restart my computer the 2 entries show up again.
