Hi all,

Im a bit new to all this:$
I have windows xp pro sp2. An sli nvidia graphics system. AM2 chip.
The system keeps randomly freezing. It had a few issues a week ago which I resolved with 'recovery console' since this, my pc just freezes. Usually right in the middle of browsing. It can come back on-line straight away or there have been instances where it has frozen immieadiatly after a reboot:@
I have insatlled 'hyjack this' on my desktop and created a log file.
If there is anything I have forgetten, please let me know and I will post it up.
Any help would be appreciated. I have virus and spyware scanned with Zone alarm. Also, used PC on point for any registry errors.
Still freezing:S

Cheers fellas!!

Jamster

Use hijackthis to fix this entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [firef0x log] firef0x.ex

Delete this file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\firef0x.exe
-you may need this:
==This one is a general purpose deleter, Unlocker 1.8.5: http://filehippo.com/download_unlocker/
Dclick the exe to install it, unchecking the updater and assistant boxes. It runs from the rclick context menu, and that is cool.
Say how things are...

Force of habit made me put C: instead of I:, but I'm sure you were on top of that one.
Nothing shows in that log... so now I can only guess. Does TM show CPU usage climbing on any particular process just b4 freeeze? Does it freeze when you use the sys in safe mode [you can start the explorer shell there instad of the cmd.exe shell which normally runs by going Start, run, explorer.exe]...
If this is a recent phenomenon I would consider uninstalling recently added software, it may even be a driver... always worth restoring to a prior date [you can revert if not fixed].
Sorry, I'm out. But pls post when you find the solution.

Hi Gerbil

well shortly before freezing the internet connection stops. Then everything else seems to freeze.
I have identified a potential freeze when working on the pc and unplugged my wireless adapter. No freeze.
My adapter cannot be found once plugged back in. Even if I open device manager and disable/enable .All that happens is device manager freezes...could this be something to do with it?
I havnt really done anything different except installing a newer nvidia graphics driver. I was getting blue screens and shut downs before, this is now cured...I think:)
Anyway, I will keep an eye on this post and reply to it with any solutions I find.

Many thanks again!

Hi All

Thought I would wrap up this post with an 'I did it!!!!!!!!!!'

It turned out to be Zonealarm!!

Uninstalled it and all my problems disappeared. The pc stays on, no crashes! The wireless adapter links to access point immediately.

What a junk piece of software! Having paid for it as well!

Anyway, all good now

Oh dear... I missed that you had Nod running with Zonelabs.... [or are you using it as an on-demand scanner only?]. Two resident AV services will conflict, sometimes badly....
Anyway, glad you got sorted. Sigh....

Hi Gerbil
Nod was disabled and not used- although it was installed on the system.
Im trying Norton 360 at the moment.
Looks good.

Hi Gerbil

Im wrong again!:S

I think its to do with the wg111t adapter.
There are threads relating to it freezing systems due to heating-up.

I have upgraded a hard drive, now using pc cillin security suite, increased power supply and done hundreds of virus scans ......still locking up:'(

I will look into using the pci card adapter option instead and see if that helps...Im hoping this might help someone to save alot of heart ache and money!!

I've had the same problem with a wg111t adapter, but i noticed it only happened when my laptop (running vista) was also on so I stopped file sharing (by changing the workgroup name, easiest way) and now I no longer get freezes on my desktop (which runs XP).
It's not ideal as i want to be able to share files...
