just got a laptop from work and the following has happened.
it boots up ok until i get to username / password screen, i dont know either.
i put win xp cd in to install over linux and it switches laptop off.
i have no linux cds.
any one any ideas please??

do you have the bios set to boot from cd before from the hard drive? please describe this shutting down more. is it right after you put in the cd or after you reboot with the cd in?
