Hacking chmod 777 folder

Hello
I am managing a blog. I kept a folder with permission 777 in the server. About a week before i found drastic rise in my traffic. I found a backdoor php script in my folder. I deleted it and changed the permission.

In my site there is no option to upload any files to server.

I want to know how did he(hacker) uploaded backboor to my server with folder permission 777. Please tell me how it is done so that i can protect myself in future

It is a secured one. How do they know the my ftp password . I have not gave to any one
