which Windows version do you use ?
does Windows load correctly in safe mode ?

btw..
you can try to use "sfc /scannow" command or the system restore.

I am having a similar problem with one of our workstations, start up windows xp sp3 and receiving Explorer.exe Application Error - The application failed to initialize properly (location 0xc0000142) then the desktop & toolbar do not appear. I can access the Task Manager to shut the system down & Task Manager does not show any Applications Running.

I'm running xp

Windows loads fine in safe mode

Did you recently installed a new software ?
You can still try sfc command or the system restore ...

Update your graphics driver. It seems only you and me get that problem.
