I really hope someone can help!

I recently recieved 2 phone call a few days apart from two different cousins. They are both having almost identical problems and I don't know how to fix them. One is running Millenium,the other xp.
They both said that there computer was really starting to slow down. To fix the problem they both used the "Last known good configuration" fix. This lead to the same result with both machines. Windows will load to the menu with the options for safe mode, ect. but when you try to use any of these utlities the screen is left with just the cursor in the top left of the screen. They both tried pushing different keys to try and get a reaction with no luck.

Someone please help if you can!

In Windows XP: got to the recovery console and type chkdsk c:

In Windows ME: did your cousin create the Windows ME startup-diskettes? If not, he has no DOS. But if he has, he can use scandisk c: or scanreg /restore.
