Only about 1/4 of my screen is taken up with the desktop background picture and the rest is white. It doesn't change if I center, stretch or tile it either and I have no idea what I might have done to deserve this. Everything seems to be working fine (windows xp professional) but I'd like to get a whole picture on there if I could. Can someone please help me with this?

Jump to PostTry to check the picture resolution. Anything smaller than 640x480 might not fit enough for your desktop background.
Also try with other picture with higher resolution if possible.

I too think resolution incompatibility may be the bad here. Right click on your desktop, Screen resolution (or smth) to see which is the exact screen dimension, then try a picture of that rez.
