Hi

I have a new Dell Dimention 3100c running windows xp home edition.
Just before Christmas I allowed my mates two teenage kids to use the house for a weekend while I was away. (I know, I know). When I got back I sat down for a session on the Net only to find that no matter what I did, I could not get IE 6 to run. I click the icon on the desktop and it simply produces a shortcut. It will not open unless I use the Mc Afee virus support button and then it does.

I downloaded Firefox and installed that but it will not recognise the flash player so I cannot access important video infomation on a friends site in the states.

I have scoured the Internet to try and find out what is going on without success. You guys are my last hope before I think about turning to drink, drugs or worse, getting married again! Help! Please, for humanities sake, help me.

See if you can get Windows Update to install an updated version of IE. I don't know that doing so will correct the issue but it may.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for replying so quickly. I have done that already but it did not help. I also tried a few IE download fixes but with no success. I reinstalled IE 6 too. I asked the lads if they did anything to the computer while I was away but they deny even touching it. I know someone did because because I found a link to a web site called Yahoo Pool on my browser's favourites.

I have the following software all ready updated and tried:
CC Cleaner.
Spybot search and destroy
Ad Aware SE Personal
Mc Afee security centre

With respect to the last item when Spybot went to work it found some stuff. I had no idea what it was but I deleted it. Today, I ran it again and the same stuff was back. This time I kept a log of it and here it is. I hope it is not wrong to post this?

AutoUpdate 1.1 ({18D1

wow... thats quite a bit of info there... lol

first I would torture the kids into relvealing the truth about using your system j/k

have you tried to complete a system restore to a date before you left?

that would be my first try.

intensify

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I tried s system restore and.... system restore would no longer work. Grrr!

have you tried booting in safe mode with networking to see if the browser works then? if it does then there is probably some program blocking it set in the startup.

try disabling all the startup programs. this will not unistall them it will only stop them from turning on when you boot your system. you will still be able to run them when you need them

go to

start-->run-->type "msconfig"--> click on the startup tab--> disable all--> apply

this will ask you to reboot the system.

if that doesn't work...

I would say try a repair install with the install CD you received from dell. make sure its an OEM copy not a "restore CD" that pc manufactorers are so fond of as of late.

oh, once you're done clearing the startup tab, click on the services tab and check the box "Hide all Microsoft services" and click disable all there too. Then try restarting the computer.

But yes, I'd always recommend a format/reinstall.

REPLY 16 FEB 2007, PERTH WEST AUSTRALIA

I have had other problems today when attempting to update Acrobat Reader to version 8 on my XP machine. After finding your query about "a weird one" was the only response to my search string (lucky, because your spelling was unique), I tried anothert tack, and located the same curly bracketted file on my PC. It was in "My Docuiments and settings\Compaq_Owner\Local Settings\Temp" (after including hidden files in the search).

The "{...} file was the very one that Acrobat Reader 8's install programme was spewing over being unable to remove it, and hence crashing with message "Error 1714 etc..". After checking this with Adobe at www.adobe.com/support/index.html, I found that the answer is linked to "a network resource that is unavailable....when you update or install ...Adobe Reader (on Windows)". I've answered you immediately, although I've not attended to my own resolution yet. That's because I blocked off my PC's network capability only yesterday, and the answer is righjt on target .

(This fits in with earlier trouble shooting today on the Reader 8 install. I found that the install programme seems to make a very similar file appear in ....Local Settings\Temp, and disappear when the install is aborted. By comparing these it's likely that they are both Acrobat Reader cabinet-type files, the only difference being the last section. {AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A80000000002} belongs to install for Acrobat 8.0, and presumably {AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-A70900000002} refers to Acrobat 7.9.

Hope this gives you a lead to an answer to your problems.

Try Disabling ALL the Add-Ons in IE
and see if that does it.

Else
Disable McAfee, see if that helps.
