Win XP to Win 2000 networking problems

I am trying to network a PC that works on Win 2k professional and a lap top that's on Win XP. I have connected the two and followed the basic set up procedures. I can ping the two machines from each other but none of them can see each other. Checked the firewalls etc but still the same. All I simply want is for the 2k machine to be able to read the C drive in the lap top. Can someone please advice ?
I am not all that technical so please go easy with me.
Cheers.

First make sure you have both machines set up on the same workgroup.
Second... Right click the drive or folder that you want to share.... click on sharing... turn on the share... and apply. You should now be able to see the share on your network from either machine... if you can not still... then your firewall might need some tweaking to let the traffic through.

let me know if you need any more help.
