Trojan Messed up My Networking & Registry

This is an XP SP2 system of Windows Media verson XP.

I accidentally ran a program with a trojan in it and Norton 360 put up a warning that something had stopped it from working.. Then, IE, Netscape and Opera could not access Internet sites. Firefox was working, but now, it too has failed in an endless loop doing a program upgrade that fails and tries again, with no opportunity for exit. Can't uninstall to reinestall Norton 360, which stopped functioning. Can't reinstall firefox. After reinstalling IE or Opera, still no connectivity though I can ping yahoo from cmd. All other computers on the network browse with no problems. Now DVD stopped working. Eudora was crashing on startup when this happened, but I managed to install Spyware Doctor and after running it was able to reinstall Eudora and get email again, but neither it nor hijack this find anything. I ran a full scan with spyware Doctor and it found nothing. I can't uninstall Norton. I can see all of the network drives, but can't browse. I can't even browse the web server on my gateway. Now my DVD drive just stopped being seen. When I boot I get the error "ehRec.exe Ppplication error....memory could not be read. This happened when I accidentally ran a program I downloaded from an unknown source via emule.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Not easily without your HJT log and preferably configuration details.

Did you try Windows Repair from the CD?

Usually though a trojan sets itself into the registry and gets something going each time you start up. So there's a lot of rigmarole to go through to get rid of the trojan. A reinstall is often the shortest route to daylight a your data.

Hi:

I saved the HJ This to a network drive as I can't browse from that computer anymore. After trying to install various programs (they won't install as one or more files get corrupted during unpack or download, or the URL is blocked to the download etc.) I can't uninstall Norton 360 to reinstall it. The CD/DVD drive stopped working, I can't boot in safe mode. Nevertheless my email client works (Eudora). All browsers did not connect except Firefox and then it did an auto update and got into an "endless loop" failing to update properly and became useless. I tried to reinstall it from a network drive, but that did not work. I was able to install only 2 of the many diagnostic programs other than HJ This, Registry Mechanic and Spyware Doctor, which fixed many things and after which Eudora stopped crashing on startup. Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Before I reinstall Windows, I'd at least like to find out what infection I received. Thanks for any help you can provide...

Maybe the brainios here can come up with something - but I've been through your HJT three times and can't find any trace of what might have screwed your system up.

The worst trojans take over a Windows process; sometimes those processes show in Windows\system32 or c:\windows by having a creation date of the time when your problems started rather than when Windows was installed. You can check the EXE and DLL files listed in your HJT log against this criterion.

Then you can wipe the disk and start again.
