Have understood that ISO 14001 is related to environmental management system. Wanted to know what is ISO 14001 Certification and why companies need it?

Having worked on projects that demanded ISO (pick a number) I came away with the view these are great ideas that you don't have to absolutely implement unless it's part of your contract or your sales depend on getting the certs. These certs cost money and why have certs you don't need.
Also, 14001 is one of over a dozen certs in the ISO 14000 suite. Why just this one? If you don't know, you don't need it.
