The only work I've done with bar codes, the scanner could sync with MS Office on Windows and from there I converted the data into plain text.
I don't know what bar code data you're working with so my advice ends here. I was working with EAN book data which I then looked up the active prices and titles from several book vendors online with a home-rolled PHP user-agent. I didn't save that specific data in a database, but it highlights my point that it depends on the data being stored.
