I've been having problems with my computer recently and suspect i might have a virus or something nasty on my system. Can someone please take a look at my report and tell me what looks bad?

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :).

Can you please do the following.

===============

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: Bar888 - {C1B4DEC2-2623-438e-9CA2-C9043AB28508} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\{3CE85~1\Bar888.dll (file missing)

O3 - Toolbar: Bar888 - {C1B4DEC2-2623-438e-9CA2-C9043AB28508} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\{3CE85~1\Bar888.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{ACE85F4B-0000-1033-ð-ð0001}] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\{ACE85F4B-0000-1033-ð-ð0001}\Update.exe" te-110-12-0000213
O4 - Global Startup: hp psc 1000 series.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: hpoddt01.exe.lnk = ?

O20 - AppInit_DLLs:

O23 - Service: COM+ Messages - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe" -e te-110-12-0000213

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\Common Files\{ACE85F4B-0000-1033-ð-ð0001}

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe (Please check the spelling and locate the exact file.)

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

When I checked the boxes in hijakcthis and clicked the fix button i received a message as follows:
Unexpected error occurred! Error 52 (bad file name or number) in sub getlongpath(?.exe). Please send a report to merijn spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing, and what version of windows you have. This message has been copied to your clipboard.

I Received the message twice. i then proceded in safe mode to delete the two files as advised. the first was removed fine, but the second ...
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe

would not delete, an error message popped up saying the file was in use or couldnt read it from the source disk. This file only appears in safe mode.

I rebooted and ran another scan with hijack this...here is my report:

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text (including the 'Files to delete') contained in the code box below to your clipboard by highlighting it and pressing Ctrl+C:

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:

  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

BTW. You are now running hijackthis from a zip file. Please unzip hijackthis to your desktop or somewhere else of your choice.

I made it up to opening avenger and typing in the file, and was prompted once to hit yes, then an error message: Error: selected file does not appear to be a valid script. I hit ok and another error message popped up: Error: press ok to log error and continue or cancel to abort. I hit ok and received Error: Error code: 1813. I hit ok again and tried typing the file without exe and the pathway several times...I received the same errors every time. I then chose load script from file and fished it out of the system folder....the same error messages came up.
What does this mean?!:?: :!:

Here is the exact log:

//////////////////////////////////////////
Avenger Pre-Processor log
//////////////////////////////////////////
Error: selected file does not appear to be a valid script.
Error code: 1813

BTW----- I also went to startmenu>run> typed in COMMAND > to get to the DOS screen and typed in ERASE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe and it told me access is denied.

In case that helps too :).

First of all I need you to confirm that you entered the following text correctly into the Avenger:

Files to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe

and NOT this;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe

You need to include the Files to delete:

Here is the log file:

Logfile of The Avenger version 1, by Swandog46
Running from registry key:
\Registry\Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\sqjosqve

*******************

Script file located at: \??\C:\WINDOWS\system32\djlslqje.txt
Script file opened successfully.

Script file read successfully

Backups directory opened successfully at C:\Avenger

*******************

Beginning to process script file:

Deletion denied! File C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe is whitelisted
Deletion of file C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe failed!

Could not process line:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
Status: 0xc0000022

Completed script processing.

*******************

Finished! Terminate.

What does this mean?

It means that you did not copy and paste the file that I posted. If you take a close look you will see that there is an S at the end of svchost indicating that it is not a legitimate file. Looking at the Avengers log, you tried to have it delete the legitimate svchost.exe file :).
