is there a way to test a motherboard....my friends hard drive went out and we replaced it....now its throwing an error code and everything points to the mb

if you are getting errors that a good point! what errors are you getting !and when,
how i test them is to remove it from the tower and hook it to the power supply and video only and start it up by jumping the psw jumpers

yes the best way to test a mobo is by removing it from the case(reflow) and then starting it up like that with bare minimum components, this will then cancel out stuff like static from the case or any shorts that the case might be causing! if you still get the errors then the only thing is to change every connected component untill you get the faulty one! IOW you will need to swop the hdd with a different one(even though its new) then the memory and then the motherboard! this is the only and safest way to make sure you dont spend money on the wrong things!
